Person of Interest: Number Crunch (2011)
An episode to keep you wanting more...!
POI just gets better and better...or maybe because I prefer character development over strictly procedural stories. This episode in particular had a lot of main character interactions.
The stand-alone story was as interesting as always, but the over-arching plot line is reeling me in! So little is known about the background of the main players, in particular Reese and Finch; the writers are wisely doling out their information very slowly.
In this episode we learn just a bit more about Reese, but only enough to wonder where the story line will go from here. Can't wait to see how the ending to this episode gets resolved!
Person of Interest (2011)
Great premise, great writing, great actors...equals great viewing!
I'm not much of a TV fan, having zero interest in reality shows or those endless procedural shows and tedious Sit-Com's.
But previews for POI caught my attention because of the concept and the names associated with it: JJ Abrams, Michael Emerson, Jim Caviezel. "Batman", "Lost", and "The Count of Monte Cristo"...there had to be something good coming out of that trio! Now I am hooked! The show gives me just the right blend of drama, action, and characterizations to keep me interested, along with seasoned actors who can make the story real.
As for critics who consider the premise of the show (the "machine") as far fetched, I would remind them that parts of such a surveillance system are already being used in many cities. One needs only to do an internet search on "public surveillance" to learn just how prevalent facial recognition spying has become!
It is this premise that makes POI stand out this season; it may be fiction, but it is fiction rooted in a scary reality unfolding before our eyes. IMHO, it's not a matter of *if* Finch's machine will become a reality...it's just a matter of when.
Add some really good scripts, talented actors, and ta-da! ...at last I have found a TV show worth watching!
The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
Typical Hollywood
Another Hollywood political message movie (ala "Day After Tomorrow").
The 1951 version, made during the Cold War era, also carried a message...but for World Peace: humans needed to find a way to get along or be destroyed.
This remake however, is a two-by-four over the head with several messages about human existence on this planet: industry is bad, technology is bad, vehicles are bad, cities are bad, etc, etc.
The military is depicted as bloodthirsty Neanderthals with guns, and the government leaders are the good guys holding out for diplomacy. (No role for a Pres or VP, likely because this film was made in the middle of the US presidential campaign...Hollywood hedged it's bets.)
Don't know what that annoying kid was supposed to do in this film other than showcase an interracial marriage.
I liked the special effects though, but glad I got the DVD on sale and didn't waste money on movie tickets.
