Strictly Confidential (2024)
Fun, stylish mystery. Loved!
I stumbled across this film by accident and I'm truly glad I did - wow! A fun, snappy, sexy drama/thriller. The movie follows Georgia Lock playing a haunted young girl on a quest to unravel the mystery surrounding her best friend's suicide. It's visually exquisite, and the plot kept me guessing right until the end, with a twist I truly didn't see coming. It's snappy and never slows down, and made me want to book a trip to the Caribbean right now. Perhaps it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I took it for what it was- a smaller budgeted indie with a unique voice and great performances. Overall- recommended!
La femme du Vème (2011)
Very stylish, but perhaps I wasn't the right audience
Whilst is the film is undeniably stylishly shot, and interestingly conceived, the overall meaning was lost on me... Perhaps I was the wrong audience. Ethan Hawke is consistent throughout as a man slowly losing his grip on reality... But somehow the whole thing just didn't pay off. I found myself falling behind the plot, so that each time there was what was intended to be a big plot reveal, I just found myself confused. I am comforted to see many of the other reviews share the same thoughts. All that being said, the film truly is stylish, and if viewed appropriately, an interesting commentary on the human mind.
Love Lies Bleeding (2024)
WOW! Totally unexpected gripping thriller/drama
I went into this film with zero idea what to expect... Whilst it certainly took me where I couldn't possibly have anticipated, I loved every second of the wild and unpredictable ride. Wow! An insane and wonderful film that drags you into a world you're totally unprepared for. I'd like to rewatch this quite a few times. Kristen Stewart is mesmerising a frustrated gym worker, trapped in a small town, with visions of a better life. She is truly a revelation throughout, somehow managing to blend deeply intense scenes with genuine comedy that feels natural and real. I'd rewatch it again for her alone. I'm also a diehard Dave Franco fan, so it was a nice surprise seeing him here.
Overall, a phenomenal job, and very recommended to all.
The English Patient (1996)
Gut wrenching... a true masterpiece
I've watched this film more times than I care to admit... it never fails to blow me away, from the exquisite scenery, to the gut wrenching performances. The duality of Ralph Fiennes never fails to amaze me, and Juliet Binoche's Oscar win for her role as a haunted nurse speaks for itself. I never particularly warmed to Kristen Scott Thomas in other projects, but her role here converted me to a lifelong fan. Masterful all around. This is film unchanged by time, and unaffected by a modern context. I truly believe it will hold up a century from today... And I certainly intend to be watching it for that long.
