The Namesake (2006)
The beautiful voyage of a thriving arranged marital union between Ashoke and Ashima
Tabu played a stellar performance as Ashima. Irfan as Ashoke was brilliant in this movie, especially capturing the essence of a middle aged Bengali man. Their chemistry was like a poetry.
The best Heart to Heart conversation in the movie:
Ashoke: All those years ago, why did you... say yes to me?
Ashima: You were the best of the lot.
Ashoke: Huh?
Ashima: Better than the widower with four children and the cartoonist with one arm. I also liked your shoes.
Ashoke: Oh. Oh, okay, okay.
Ashima: you want me to say, "I love you," like the Americans?
Ashoke: Eh. (surprise)
Ashoke: Huh. (blush)
Ashima: Huh. (tease)
Ashoke: Bright Smile and laughs.
The movie also showcases first generation immigrant parents struggles on foreign land, their family connections, cultural differences, especially between Americanized children's Western thinking and those of their parents who are more conservative and traditional.
I liked the scene where Gogol denies to sit on rickshaw in Kolkata by saying "No, being pulled by another human being is feudal and exploitative."
I also liked the scene where Gogol finds his passion during his unexpected family trip to India. When he visited Taj Mahal and the surrounding monuments he decided to major in Architecture. I guess travelling to new places in general helps us to attain new perspectives and find new interests.
The visit to Taj Mahal also ignited a cute romantic conversation between Ashima and Ashoke in their own way:
Ashima: I've always wanted to come here with you.
Ashoke: Smiles
Ashima: Just imagine how much Shah Jahan must loved Mumtaz to make this for her.
Ashoke: Other husbands also love their wives, Ashima. (Holds Ashima's hand). Only we cannot afford to build Taj Mahal.
Ashima: Smiles.
I wish all arranged marriages happening in India to turn out to be this beautiful.
I felt like the film went downhill after Ashoke dies.
The Lift Boy (2019)
Movie talks about HOPE and KINDNESS
The colour grading throughout the film is poor but still the movie managed to struck the right chords. The casting was spot on. Princess and Raju looked cute together. And no character left unnoticed.
When Raju was sitting on a random bench at Carter Road, Bandra and a boy selling tea approached him to serve tea then Raju asks the boy why he wasn't going to school and the boy replies "who will pay the fees". I believe this incident changed Raju for good. He realized that if Mrs. Maureen D'Souza hadn't paid for his education he too would be probably remained uneducated and working on streets so he didn't want to take the help he got for granted. He understood how lucky he was to get the opportunity to study and he didn't want to waste it by failing.
The goodness of Mrs. Maureen D'Souza's character lives on even after she dies in the movie. We have seen hero's been called as Boy next door, I would say she is a Granny Next door. In the end we discover that Mrs. Maureen D'Souza's life's masterpiece was none other than upbringing Raju.
The scenes where Raju kisses the late D'Souza on forehead and Shawn chooses the Platinum package for D'Souza's funeral arrangements made my heart smile.
Take away: Life is indeed an abstract, the more people you meet the more colour you discover.
The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019)
You know it is a great film when by the end of it you got tears in your eyes and a smile on your face
This film tore my heart out, but in a good way. The story, the characters, the performances, what a great film and I wonder why it hasn't had more promotion because I think this film is totally underrated. It is a lovingly delightful tale of perseverance through heartbreak and loss. The best and the highlight of the movie was when Enzo finally was on track and those laps with Denny...ahh my heart!!. If you didn't think you could love a dog more, just wait till you see what words will do coming out of a dog's mouth. My heart strings tight, choked up more than once! I felt every emotion with Enzo! The best ever portrayal of loyalty and love. How much our doggie loves us & sometimes we take them for granted. Our doggie is not just a pet but our companion, and their whole world revolves around our world. The ending of the film left me smiling, heart-warmed, and admittedly with a few more sappy tears streaming. Loved it and can't wait to watch it again in a few years for another healthy cry. One thing that I want everyone to take from this movie is just be in your present and don't look back at your past or don't expect much from future because present is something that you have with you for now. My favorite Enzo dialogues from the film... " I'd like to stay out here forever - stay with them forever. But we can't have everything we want. Besides, the best drivers don't dwell on the future or the past. The best drivers focus only on the present". "Call it fate, call it love, all I knew, I was meant to be his dog".
The Trial (2023)
Engaging Series
I'm uncertain about why this series received a low rating, but personally, I enjoyed it a lot as it kept me thoroughly engaged. Nowadays, we often witness excessive use of abusive language, cuss words, and unnecessary sex scenes in many series. However, this particular series refrained from incorporating such elements, despite having the opportunity to do so. It impressively depicted the struggles of a woman trying to protect her family at any cost, while also avoiding over-dramatization. The series also portrayed the significance of a woman's career. Though at times, I found it slightly drawn-out, I am eagerly anticipating the next seasons.
