The Great Indian Kitchen (2021)
It's an everyday story that nearly every indian can identify with
It's an everyday story that nearly every indian can identify with. So it was very predictable. But it was too long and too slow to keep the viewer engaged. The slow pace didn't allow enough empathy to build for the main character. I'm glad that the story didn't turn into a dramatic revolution or a protest against patriarchy. Life goes on. Change is not for everyone. Would have been excellent if it was told in forty minutes or less.
The acting is spot on. Every character is perfectly etched. The cinematography is subtle and brilliant at the same time. The cinematography, editing, art or acting didn't compete for prominence and maintained the attention to the story.
Vikram (2022)
A crass action film that borrows heavily from everything you've ever watched, read, heard and loved
It's a crass action film that borrows heavily from everything you've ever watched, read, heard and loved. Music, background score, camera angles, action sequences, costumes, special effects, props, dialogues, ideas,... it's a myriad of inspirations. But they aren't executed well enough to pay tributes to the originals.
It may appeal to an audience who haven't read Diamond Comics or watched Hollywood hits. Or the ones who have poor imagination and can't connect the dots.
There's a bit of unintended comedy in very serious situations. Like the introduction of Special Agent Tina. Or the forced repetition of the phrase 'Once upon a time there lived a ghost'.
Ponniyin Selvan: Part One (2022)
Tedious. Choppy. Boring. Unconvincing.
Tedious. Choppy. Boring. Unconvincing.
Too many grand old actors trying to play young.
It's not even bad enough to be funny.
Mani has absolutely lost his ability to weave magic on screen.
The novel may have been good. But it's a poorly made movie. An absolute drag.
Ponniyin Selvan was a modern novel. Not to be confused with history. History is fact. Novel is fiction, which can be inspired by real life situations.
For the self professed Chola history buffs: It was the same story in every kingdom. Vanity, jealousy, betrayal, lust and revenge.
But Trisha was gorgeous. Wish she had more screen time.
Plan A Plan B (2022)
Led by a pair who can't act to save themselves
Other than the poor acting, the music is terrible, so is the direction or the lack of it. The poor script was not even balanced with some eyecandy. Waste of time.

Suzhal - The Vortex (2022)
A cacophony of metaphoricals
It was engaging to watch. But a few days later as an after thought, it isn't memorable. It was just a noisy mess with a hairline story. The screenplay was largely metaphorical. The camera and lighting were below par, with dreamy soft glow lighting employed in nearly every shot. Parthiban's acting skills went unutilised. The police officers were poorly portrayed to command any respect or fear. The senior police office seemed to be the weakest of the lot to command any authority. None of the romantic angles shared any chemistry, the young lovers, the adulterers, the married couples, the newly engaged, the crush or the pervert. There was no sexual tension. Barring the noise and the jarring visuals, it was flat with no substance.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Steeped in nostalgia and cliches, it's a reminiscing tribute to the cult classic
"Don't think, just do it"; was probably what the crew did while filming this movie. Steeped in nostalgia and cliches, it's a reminiscing tribute to the cult classic. Crows feet, baggy eyes and saggy skin in extreme closeup didn't help TC and JC to charm the viewers. Neither did the attempt at youthful romance by the ancient couple ignite passion. It's a family friendly entertainer. But it doesn't have any special moments or music to make it as endearing as the original or clinch a second viewing.
The Batman (2022)
Nolan and Bale set the bar too high
This is not the Batman we can relate to. It's absurdly unconvincing. It's painfully slow. I hope there isn't a sequel to this. The cinematography and editing is very good.
House of Gucci (2021)
The house of Reggiani?
Misleading title. Should have been 'The house of Reggiani'. Lady Gaga painfully hogs the runtime. The narrative dumbs down every character in the story. There is no chemistry between any of them. Looks like a primary school play.
Fargo (2014)
Season 2 was the best of the three
Gripping. Great story telling. Unhurried pace. A perfect balance of real and absurd.

Schumacher (2021)
Based on a true story. But not the true story.
A white washed narration of who the real Schumi was.
The docu just skims on the ruthless side of Schumi.
This may not have worked if he wasn't still bed-ridden.
Blackhat (2015)
There's absolutely no reason to watch this movie
I guess Chris Helmsworth accepted to play in this movie to earn some quick money to purchase his property in Byron Bay.
There's no entertainment value in the movie. Poor acting. Poor cinematography. Unconvincing plot. No story. No emotions. No romance. No action. No direction. Just an utter waste of time.
The Ice Road (2021)
What a truck-all movie
Slim story.
Poor logic.
Boring action scenes.
Emotions are as icy as the landscape.
Predictable with a yawn.
Kutty Story (2021)
5 stars to Aadal Paadal. Skip the rest.
5 stars to the last story: Aadal Paadal. Too bad, it has to share title with three other below average shorts.
Nalan brilliantly exposes the fragile and toxic masculinity of the lead character. Even a fake Jeep is planted in the backdrop to subtly highlight the character's boosted ego.
Black Widow (2021)
Black Wid-oh ho ho ho
Black Wid-oh ho ho ho
Yaaawn.
Started well.
Then it became funny.
Then it was boooring.
Wrath of Man (2021)
There is Jason Statham and some action
1 star for casting Jason Statham and another for including a little action.
Noah (2014)
Build a floating zoo with ample opportunities for sex to keep your family happy
Noah and his wife Naamah begin to build a floating zoo to feed and entertain their three young boys. The construction goes on for many many years, in which time the three boys grow into young adults. That's when Noah and Naamah discover that they have a horny and hungry family. And with that comes the realisation that there is no greater pleasure than an orgasm and no greater satisfaction than eating meat. And no morality can come in between pleasure and satisfaction. Noah is selfish when it comes to sex, he holds back from spanking his wife Naamah even when she begs to be punished. Later in the movie it is revealed that Noah is a male chauvinistic pig who kills female infants.
Befikre (2016)
Glamorous, silly, pretentious, annoying, infuriating
Set in Paris. Glamorous. Pretentious. Silly. Annoying. Infuriating. Absolute waste of time.
Sherni (2021)
A civilisation gone astray
A realistic story of an intelligent and courageous individual, who performs her job with utmost sincerity amid overbearing patriarchy and spineless bureaucracy.
Sound of Metal (2019)
Great sound design. Blah story.
Great sound design. The story of an irresponsible and entitled young couple who would be wasting the tax payers money. Average acting. Shallow screenplay. Could have been a good book.
Tenet (2020)
Too much, too fast, too bland
Tenet is hypothetically hypothetical. It requires the audience to be in a meditative attention to grasp the fast and non-repetitive narrative. It's definitely not a movie to wind down with after a long day. Due to the complexity of the narrative, there was little scope for acting, and the characters were talking all the time to explain the situation. The dialogues might actually sound normal if the movie is slowed down to 0.8x. It has ten hours worth of story-telling crammed into 2.5 hours. Imagine 26 episodes of Dark crammed into 2.5 hours, editing out the gorgeous Lisa Vicari (Martha). Or X-Men without Wolverine and Mystique.
Aamis (2019)
Bizarrely different
The good bits: Simple linear screenplay. Actors didn't overact.
The narration fails to make the viewer emotionally connect with any of the characters. The characters' cravings are shallow and whimsical. There are no intense scenes to portray the development of the cravings. The director makes feeble attempts to justify the odd sequence of events. The movie tries in vain to romanticize a bizarre consummation. There is no suspense or mystery to over-think and unravel. It tries to convey that depraved humans could engage in anti-social activity to satiate their hunger.
It's just bizarrely different. Different doesn't mean good.
The Last Stand (2013)
Too terrible to rate
The people who have upvoted this title are either liars or bots. This may go down as Arnie's worst. There is no action, no comedy, no logic, no story, no acting, no directing, no, no, no. Everything is very lazy and utterly disappointing. Give this one a pass.
Gantumoote (2019)
A beautiful love story
Gantumoote is one of the finest love stories of Indian Cinema. It's beauty lies in it's simplicity. The magical screenplay and subtle acting evokes emotions without melodrama. This is my most favourite Kannada film after Thithi. This is another epic which proves that content is king and language is never a barrier. A must watch for those who appreciate simple and unpretentious story telling.
The Blacklist (2013)
Script without direction and actors with no skill
My wife has been hooked to this show and I feel insulted with her choices, me being one of them. The script of this series is vague and directionless. And no character is clearly defined, but they are all consistently stupid. Anybody can be anybody's dad or daughter. It's generally filed with poor logic and very low IQ. It wouldn't be a surprise if future episodes bring in aliens, zombies, vampires and whatever you imagine.
I wonder how it has such high reviews. Possible explanations could be:
Only the most unimaginative people are watching it and rating it.
Netflix is faking the reviews and ratings.
Also Netflix has gotten hooked on to 'Black'. Too many series starting with Black... And all of them fail past the first few episodes.
Netflix could rename itself to Blackfix.
