CHiPs: Things That Go Creep in the Night (1983)
Season 6, Episode 21

gloriously ridiculous
9 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The previous review basically nailed it...but failed to include any of the ridiculous specifics. This one is soooo weird you might watch with open mouth and tilting head. Kelly preston (JERRY MAGUIRE, BATTLEFIELD EARTH) wanders around with post-traumatic amnesia (if one were so inclined, one might splice her shrieking sequences here into a fine scientology documentary). Elvira and dr. Joyce brothers make appearances. But most of all, the over-the-top villain is...rich little (LAUGH-IN, ROBIN HOOD)! They truly should have made this the final episode of the series. Did i mention the hologram technology? This ain't no whimper.

Strangely competent...
9 August 2023
Farewell, hot dog. Baker-replacement bobby nelson (tom reilly - VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, ANIMAL INSTINCTS 1-2) gets replaced as ponch's partner, as the series scrambles futilely to stay above water. He's still in the episode, but out of the limelight, as ponch takes on his younger brother bruce (bruce penhall - GUNS, CHiPs '99) as his new new partner. The show's normal misogynistic, violent failings aside, this one is strangely competent, dialogue and plot-wise. And the show can't be faulted for ditching hot dog - reilly was a bit wooden, and bruce is an upgrade. In hindsight, the producers had clearly been grooming penhall to take over for some time. Not a bad story, as ponch and bruce take on a corrupt small-town sheriff.

Jon...is...gone
4 July 2023
Larry wilcox has left the series, and ponch soldiers on alone. Er, not technically alone, he has a new hot dog junior baker-clone partner. But the show doubles down on selling estrada as sex symbol - if you fancy some naked ponch, season 6 is the one for you. Officers bonnie, bear, and jed (farewell, dornie!) are also gone...with NO explanation. At least baker gets a postcard on a bulletin board. The producers pump in extra celebrity magic, hoping you won't notice the emperor is losing garments quickly. Tommy lasorda has a stilted pull-over, and (in the only reason this turkey didn't get fewer stars), richard simmons gives yoga instruction to a barely-clothed ponch. The sexual tension is palpable. Or not.

Cue the shark fin...
21 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Somehow the universe is a more perfect place, knowing CHiPs had their moment of shark-jumping infamy. Needless to say, the bar was pretty low to begin with...but be prepared to watch with jaw agape, as jon and ponch chase burglars who use a laser to blind their victims. The effects and struck-by-laser acting are unforgettable. George lindsey (THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, HEE HAW) stars as a washed-up western movie star. The plot is even more convoluted than usual, but the sequence that puts it over-the-tank is when jon jumps on a horse to chase a fleeing car. Yes, there were cars he could have commandeered. He chose the horse. Wait, i almost forgot...the horse is blind. Does he get his men? Need you ask?
