The absence of Larry Wilcox who played Officer Jon Baker is explained via a postcard Getraer puts on the wall. Baker is said to have moved to Wyoming to work on his father's ranch. The character would return in CHiPs '99 (1998) as Captain Jon Baker as if the move to Wyoming never took place. See more »

Officer Bobby Nelson Is NO Officer Jon Baker
10 August 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

In "Meet The New Guy",Ponch becomes the training officer of a new CHP rookie.

Ponch, who is now a training officer known as "Mary 6",is out cruising westbound on the Santa Monica Freeway as "The Lone Ranger".Then Sgt.Getraer tells him over the radio his new partner is coming to meet him. Ponch is upset and reminds Getraer that he said he'd never get another probationer. As he does, Ponch's new partner, Bobby Nelson, played by Tom Reilly, rides up.

Both Ponch and Bobby try catch a pair of health-club thieves. In the process, they find a runaway teenage mother who has stolen back the baby she sold.

In this episode,it is evident that Larry Wilcox will be missed.Estrada and Reilly do not have the same chemistry that the former shared with Wilcox.Added to that, both Jon and Ponch make the show interesting unlike Ponch and Bobby.Blame it on Tom Reilly's wooden acting.
