Bauer for life...
The character of Jack Bauer has continued to fascinate me ever since I began this series on DVD last January. Now that I am done with five seasons, I feel fairly well acquainted with my friend Jack, and look forward to season six. I have been attempting to reconcile my belief in the God of the Bible; the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ; and the exciting adventures of Jack Bauer. I have found, so far, that Bauer recognizes good and evil, demonstrates confidence and decisiveness, and exhibits savior-like qualities in his attitude towards life.
Evil is not a popular subject in the modern world. We would like to think it does not exist. I claim God as the source of all good things, and the freedom God offers us allows for the existence of evil. We can choose things that are not of God; therefore evil exists. Bauer recognizes evil in intentions and actions, and celebrates the good by effectively dealing with evil. The confidence and decisiveness found in Bauer echo two realities about a God who deals with us in love, judgment, and grace. There is an unrelenting willingness in Bauer to sacrifice his life to save the other. The idea of stepping in someone else's shoes, serving, giving, and ultimately surrendering everything is the gospel story. I find in Jack Bauer a role model for life; as I yearn to discern good from evil; strive to have complete confidence and decisiveness in action; and hope to be willing to lay my life down for the other.
