Fargo: Bisquik (2024)
Good triumphs over evil
Seems like a lot of reviewers missed the point... it's simple. In the long run good will triumph over evil. A simple meal of biscuits and chili and empathy vs. An unfortunate history of misery. The power of positive thinking... would man have landed on the moon if everyone said it couldn't be done? Fortunately there are a lot of people like Dot that know this. Even people who are depressed by current events know that it will get better. I think that this is the central theme that runs through the Fargo movie and series. And dark humor to defuse the dark. Given this, how else would the naysayers want the season to end?
Planet Earth II (2016)
Should be required viewing in schools
This is probably the most intimate documentary I have seen of our fellow species on earth. Awesome. After having a bad day... watch this. Your problems will seem insignificant compared to life in general. We may be the top of the food chain. but this will illustrate the type of struggles we had to endure to get here. Humbling. Young people need to know their place in nature.
The Good Doctor (2017)
To the naysayers... give it a second look.
Just watched the first episode, and I admit that it is a little unrealistic. After all, TV series are limited to a fixed time of one hour or so, so a lot of subtleties can't be explored. But this episode is great at the essentials... anyone, despite our flaws, are capable of doing great things, if given the chance. I am guessing that this is the theme of the series. If you had a life-threatening condition that requires serious intervention, which would you rather have... a surgeon that just wants to get to the golf course, or perhaps a surgeon that is distracted by personal issues... or a surgeon that is obsessed with fixing your problem? There are some such doctors, but an autistic person is more likely going to focus their specific personal strengths on the problem at hand, even though they may not be able to function as a "normal" person. Don't we want a society that allows everyone to make the most use of their potential?
The Vietnam War (2017)
Should be required viewing for presidential candidates and other politicians
Another Ken Burns masterpiece (and his great crew). Brought back a lot of memories from my high school and university years. A great argument about the futility of war. Eloquently expressed by John Kerry to Congress... I'm sure it motivated him to join the system in hopes of changing it for the better. (without forgetting the lessons of Hitler and Pearl Harbor)
