St. Trinian's (2007)
Comic book caper
Fun filled and over the top look at a dysfunctional school parodied on St Trinneans School, Edinburgh where self-discipline was first practised, the movie starts well introducing all the different characters.
However it doesn't take too long before the movie starts feeling more like the fast show, clips of different story lines to pull a gag.
The underlying storyline brews slowly but never quite boils.
Could have been much better with a more cohesive plot and some better acting.
Brand makes his turn in a character exactly mirroring his persona from Big Brother's Little Brother whilst Rupert Everett's turn as the headmistress was over the top and other than Talulah Riley, the acting quite mediocre.
Devil's Prey (2001)
Quite disappointing, even for a B-movie
I gave it a 2 because the actors were OK, the actresses quite pretty and they seemed to make at least a half-hearted effort.
The rest of the movie however is awful. There's little suspense other than the odd shock, the plot is poor, the script awful and the production value horrendous.
I've tried really hard to be generous with this one but have found it difficult. It's also quite perturbing to see Jerry O'Connell's brother in this movie as there are flashes when one thinks it's him, but then the realisation seeps in that it's just someone who looks like him!
Avoid. Don't even waste your money on renting this one.
Mama's Boy (2007)
Below average comedy
Starts really well, nice intro and build up for the main characters but after about 5 minutes, the charm is lost.
The character is in the same mould as the main protagonist from American Pie and Loser without the supporting cast or innovative storyline that made the Pie movies more of a commercial success.
Let's be honest - Heder's acting was pretty poor. Keaton, Daniels and Faris did their best but had no substantial plot or script to get their teeth into The movie just plods on without any pace or clear logical storyline justifying its length.
The ending is about as predictable as they come - so predictable I've ticked the spoilers box for this one line.
My advice: avoid at all costs unless you really really have nothing else to do/listen to or watch and even then you'll feel the producers just cheated you out of an hour and a half of your life.
Beowulf (2007)
Ray Winstone?
240 other people have already extensively commented on this fine movie.
However my only question is why on earth did they cast a cockney in he lead role? There's something that just doesn't quite fit with the character, the Vikings and the knowledge that he's actually quite fat in real life.
The actual CGI Beowulf looked far more like Sean Bean who surely would have made a better lead?
OK movie apart from that. The other characters, though displaying some dodgy Danish accents, appear quite at home in the movie and the plot and action sequences move along very nicely.
I was only put off by the completely out of place Cockney Winstone, chirping in here and there - worst when he was trying to be eloquent.
Driftwood (2006)
Not much of a fan
The movie clearly hits home with some people, but for me I'm afraid it missed the mark.
From the outset the acting appeared somewhat B-movie-like. Some characters overacted, the script felt unnatural and some of the lines spouted were just clichés from a phrase book.
The lead guy was OK - his acting was clearly what the producers spent their money on. By no means an Oscar-winning performance, he did grab the spotlight but only really thanks to the quite terrible acting around him.
The story is OK - that's all though, "ok". Not great, not inspiring. Nothing new. I only just made it to the end but constantly wished it could have been forwarded.
Seeing as most people here seemed to enjoy it, I can hardly tell you to stay away but it is in no way shape or form a great movie.
The Insatiable (2006)
Poor script, clichéd acting
*No real action *No entertaining plot *Main actors were good within the confines of a dire script
So the lead actress was hot and the lead actor recognisable from his stint as the Young Indiana Jones... just a lot older looking.
As far as vampire movies go, this was pretty lame. As far as subtle comedies go, it wasn't good but wasn't as bad. I don't know if it was intended to be comical, but the acting was pretty comical - the lead played a dead-beat down-on-his-luck guy pretty well but all in all this was a dire movie.
The plot in theory is a good one but it wasn't especially interesting, was especially predictable and really should have been much shorter.
I probably wouldn't get to the end of this movie if it was on TV and certainly wouldn't rent it on DVD or watch it at the movies.
The Apocalypse (2007)
Awful movie - do not watch it!
I watched this based on the review which appears as the main "User Review"... I really should have read the other two... I've wasted an hour and a half of life, which I'll never get back.
Being fair, there are pros and cons.
Pros:
-great opening 5mins to the movie
-nice initial special effects
Cons:
-awful sound; to the point where you can barely hear the dialogue due to the sounds of the SFX and music. almost like the actors had no mics near them!
-awful acting; whilst watching I thought it may have been some sort of fan-based movie or perhaps an amateur movie
-awful plot; similar to 'The Day After Tomorrow' with no rhythm, no clear continuity and no point really
-fairly poor special effects; considering the other flaw in the movie this is relatively not as bad but to be honest quite pointless and not very believable (apart from the first 5mins)
Please don't watch this movie, you'll regret it!
This movie is truly deserving of the 1 out of 10 rating
