Funny Man (1994)
Hilarious
Some people it seems just take life far too seriously. This film is meant to be fun.....hence the title!Dont go expecting a deep psychological horror, just take it for what it is-an hour and a half of slapstick humour with some gore thrown in for good measure!
When I first saw this film back in 95 i lent the video to my friends and everyone loved it-a perfect film for parties and drinking beer too!Life is short as it is so lighten up you people who slagged this film off and learn to enjoy yourselves!
10/10
Ghostwatch (1992)
Still Has The Power To Chill
I remember watching this the night it was on and wishing i'd recorded it.I was totally transfixed.I'd missed the first few minutes where it was introduced as a drama and hadn't read the pre publicity so i assumed it was going out live-of course it all starts off rather slowly and you think nothing will happen.I recall the BBC had done some Halloween shows with Paul Daniels where one year he was impaled in an Iron Maiden and another where he was burnt in a fire-They were put out live-i thought ok more of the same but i started to see things which disturbed me.OK there were the light hearted moments with Craig Charles and the bogus Welsh phone caller but i still felt uneasy-even when it appeared it was all a hoax at one point i still felt unconvinced then when things really started to happen and Michael Parkinson said they would be staying with events i was running on adrenalin-was this the biggest scoop ever for the BBC??-when the young girl appeared to be possessed i did think it was a bit too Exorcist and thats when the doubts crept in-but the phone calls in seemed so genuine and when everything starts to go horribly wrong i was swept up in it all-i dont want to say too much in case people want to see the DVD for themselves but i was scared and it takes a lot to scare me!
In my job as a printer,I have to work in a darkroom-sometimes when i step in there and close the door to stand in complete darkness........well i sometimes think i can hear a cat start to screech.........
Jesus of Nazareth (1977)
Outstanding
I remember seeing the TV mini series as a child-i was only about 6 but remember seeing Robert Powell and thinking he WAS Jesus-testament to how well he acted the part.
For years I only saw glimpses of it on television but i recently purchased the DVD and now its like seeing it for the first time and now being an adult i can understand what happens much better.I'm a lapsed Christian-i do believe in God but in my own way.Watching this film had me in tears especially the condemning and crucifixtion of Jesus-this film makes you believe you're right there watching it happen.Excellent direction and locations and of course fine acting by all especially James Farantino,John Duttine,Ian Mc Shane and of course Robert Powell. In England whenever I've seen him interviewed invariably the first question now some 25 years later is still about his portrayal of Jesus. He speaks with great dignity about it and is happy if people want to talk about the film.
I'm amazed the film never won more awards than it did.Truly it's a masterpiece.
Carrie (1976)
A Classic
Just watched the recently released DVD of this film and it still has the ability to shock after all this time-not shock as in jump out of your seat(well maybe at the end)but the suspense and atmosphere of the film provides its own shocks.Excellent cast-especially Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.Betty Buckley as the Gym teacher was superb also and showed a real humanity and kindness to Carrie in the film.
DePalma does a masterful job in directing this film and i dont understand some of the flak he's taken in some of the reviews here.Cohen translated Kings novel magnificiently in his screenplay and in my opinion made it a better story.
A film that is too rare these days-well acted, directed and chilling without resorting to full on gore.
10 out of 10
Threads (1984)
Harrowing,Compelling Film
I remember being 12 when this was first shown but not being allowed to watch it by my parents for fear of me having nightmares.I finally saw it at 15 when the threat of nuclear war was still very real.It scared the hell out of me and today 15 years later still does.I managed to get the video of this film and i've watched it a number of times and it still sends shivers down the spine. The explosion scenes, yes they are culled from several different sources but integrated with the film work superbly. The anguish of the parents who lose their son and daughter is heartbreaking and when the husband cant get his dying wife some water-its tragic to see.
The scenes of the people underground trying to keep the threads of normality together are superbly acted-what can you do?You share their despair and helplessness they feel.
The BBC always seem to do this sort of drama best-ok if it was made now then the effects would be far better but i prefer the more basic approach that we see here.
This film should be rereleased and shown to everyone.
Annihilator (1986)
strange
Just seen this film on tv......and well the plot had promise but never delivered on it-we never found out why all this was happening and how.The way the film ends you think there may be a sequel-leaves a lot of unanswered questions.......
The House on Sorority Row (1982)
good film!
I bought this a few years ago on ex rental video but forgot all about it until i moved house recently-anyway i sat down to watch it and was pleasantly surprised how good it still is!For a so called slasher film it is well acted and filmed-some very novel camera angles like the view of the body out of the attic and when Katie is hallucinating-images of her dead friends, the cane and Slater mixed in with dancers is unnerving!
I always have a chuckle at the parties they throw-very 80's music-brings back memories-haha!And the scene where the fat guy is checking the water out before being pushed in in his enormous pants had me rolling with laughter!
Eileen Davidson plays the part of the ring leader very well as do all the cast really. For a small budget i think everyone involved did a great job and i'm planning to buy the DVD as soon as possible.Thumbs up!
Slaughter High (1986)
Silly But Fun!
Saw this film years ago on video and found a cheap copy of it recently.Yeah i know they're not exactly the right age for the parts they're playing and of course most of the cast can't disguise their British accents but i still like it for a laugh!
Some of the murder scenes are inventive though how did he know they'd end up on the bed or taking a bath???!!!!
Ending is a bit strange and sorry to hear about the suicide of the guy who played Marty.Otherwise an enjoyable film not to be taken seriously!
