Poor Things (2023)
An amazing film, but definitely not for all people
Poor Things is as if Stanley Kubrick and Wes Anderson made Edward Scissorhands, but Edward was a girl, and way more talkative. (Also not scissors for hands, thank Godwin for her!)
Emma Stone laid herself bare (for 50% of the film) and deserves her Oscar.
Kudos to the winners for Production Design (winner by a mile, the complexity), Makeup and Hairstyling, and Costume Design.
The only flaw was the terribly wooden performance by Jerrod Carmichael who I would like to recommend for the Golden Raspberry awards. It was if he was in a grade school play as Tree #2 and unfortunately had lines.
It is sad that many people are giving this bad reviews just because it is not their kind of movie. Maybe do a little bit more research and watch movies you will actually like.
Speaking of Wes Anderson, I had trouble watching both The French Dispatch and Asteroid City. They just weren't compelling to me. But I found Poor Things really compelling throughout.
The Last Duel (2021)
Despite reservations, an excellent film, Ridley Scott never disappoints.
I watched this movie in three parts due to interruptions, and it is actually
structurally split into 3 parts.
I had some trepidations about this movie because I thought it would be
hard to imagine Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as French knights and
possibly also Adam Driver (although I don't absolutely despise Kylo Ren
as much as some people).
I quickly found out that this wasn't really a problem. It did take maybe a
few extra minutes for Ben Affleck, but he's kind of the 4th character anyway.
What I did find is midway through, there was a definite MeToo vibe emerging.
Then, I started to worry "am I secretly being preached to?"
But in the end, I was fully satisfied.
To me, this was not Alien, Gladiator, or Black Hawk Down, but it
was still a pretty amazing Ridley Scott movie.
By the way, it was VERY reminiscent of the Duellists, which if you
haven't seen, you definitely should. (and not just because it's an
Iron Maiden song).
The Outer Limits: The Zanti Misfits (1963)
Zanti Misfits, Classic!
My friends would come for a sleepover every Friday. On the docket: Planet of the Apes, Night Stalker, and finally at midnight Outer Limits. Zanti Misfits is the most classic episode in my opinion. (But all amazing.?) How can you not be freaked out by their creepy ant faces?
