Batman Forever (1995)
Misunderstood
What a tragedy that Joel believed fans hated him for misunderstanding the character, when in reality, I think he understood Bruce Wayne and Gotham in such a personal, tragic way.
People talk about the homo-erotic nature of the Joel's Batman, but never beyond the aesthetics.
Repressed men trying to fit into an insane society that rejects trauma, forced to hide during the day.
Free to be who they are once the sun sets and the neon lights start shining.
Edward Nygma longing to be someone who is pretending to be normal, straight, acceptable. Bruce trying to accept the hidden parts of himself.
Chris O'Donnell here is the best "Jason Todd" (with the name and Circus of Grayson) we've gotten.
Release Joel's Cut. Please.
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
A mixed bag
Lots of great stuff:
Love everything with Steve and Tony. First and third acts are filled with emotional weight and complex conflicts. Tom Holland gets to play a confident, charming and relatable Peter Parker. He clearly has money issues, but doesn't let that stop him from building dumpster computers. He also talks to Tony more like an equal, much less "Mr. Stark!", much more "with great power comes great responsibility". Black Panther has a great arc as we witness him become more of a king and less of a vengeful badass. Character moments and interactions are fantastic, as always.
Some weird stuff:
I've always been a fan of the grounded Russo action, but hate the way they film superhero action. The airport scene works purely because of the characters, the action scene itself is pretty blandly photographed. CG Airport. CG cartoon Spidey. Floating Downey head on a CG body.
Sometimes I wish these movies would pick a character, or set of characters, and slow the hell down. Let me breathe and feel. Anchor on Steve and Bucky, let us see the story through a more focused perspective.
Then I remember there are 13 characters and I don't know what to think.
Oh and give Spider-Man a real costume for god's sake. Please.
Tazmanian Devil (2020)
Absolutely delightful
When I walked into this movie, I was a little nervous because the reviews were pretty bad. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. This movie is such a pleasure to watch. All the actors are doing a great job, and have such great chemistry with each other. The pacing in this movie is great, and you never get bored while watching it. There's also a fairly balanced tone throughout the entire movie. I don't get why people rated this movie so low. Also, did I mention that the cinematography in this movie is absolutely beautiful. Some of the shots in this movie are just so good. Overall, this movie is just so easy to enjoy. I highly recommend watching this.
