Britannia (2017)
Think THE PRINCESS BRIDE not GLADIATOR
Normally I'm a stickler for historical accuracy. My hobby is historical gaming and I read history nonstop. But that is simply a completely ridiculous lens to view Britannia through. The tone is set in virtually the first frame when we are told that Julius Caesar stopped in to Celtic Britain and immediately turned tail and fled. In some parts of 'Merica we like to say, "That's a JOKE, son!" It reminds me of MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL where an attendant sings of brave sir Robin "He bravely turned tail and ran away." Now, I understand that it's not an outright comedy but the tone is MUCH closer to THE PRINCESS BRIDE than GLADIATOR -- thank goodness! Yes, it's set during the reign of Claudius...and yes a few quasi-historical references are dropped into the script but basically this is good campy fun that indulges some terrific actors and technicians while they send up the current spate of programs based on "historical" fiction like VIKINGS and THE LAST KINGDOM and fill in the blank. The people here who are pillorying this series for not being reverent enough of the ~dozen hard facts we actually KNOW about the Druids -- well -- the joke is on them and they don't like it. But that's what happens when your education is the sum total of the programs you watch on The History Channel. For the rest of us it's a combination of ripping good yarn and grand silliness. Make some popcorn and enjoy the ride!
Arrival (2016)
You'll love this film IF...
...you like Sixth Sense and Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five.
If you don't like those two stories...for whatever reason...steer clear of this.
It's cerebral sci-fi which has almost become an oxymoron.
