Ted Lasso: So Long, Farewell (2023)
Be Curious, Not Judgmental
My all time favorite Ted Lasso scene is the dart match between Ted and Rupert. It encapsulates everything magical about this show and is an incredible setup to Season One's last episode. Unfortunately, the magic of Season One gave way to a less than magical Season Two. And the start of Season Three, while promising, left me somewhat underwhelmed. But after a few episodes of Season Three, the Lasso Way started kicking in and the magic returned. By Episode 9 I was hooked again and savoring every episode. But words can't describe the brilliance of So Long, Farewell. Another reviewer said they 'stuck the landing', which is correct, but doesn't do it justice. It was an incredible experience that I didn't want to end. So thank you Ted Lasso for bringing it home. And please leave things as they are...no spin-offs, no crazy schemes...let us savor and remember this brilliant series for what it is.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
I Gave it One Star Because I couldn't give 0 stars
This is the worst movie I've ever watched. It reminds me of Springtime For Hitler, a play created to bomb that somehow becomes a success. I have no idea what the Academy saw in this movie vs Tar, All Quiet on The Western Front, or any of the other contenders. Similarly, I have no idea how these actors won Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. If the Academy wants to reward ethnic actors and give Jamie Lee Curtis a Lifetime Achievement Award, then just do it. Don't clog up the awards with manufactured winners. This movie is a piece of garbage with no redeeming qualities. I read that it was made for only $20mm, given what I've seen, it probably could have been made for $1.50...and even that would be a stretch. Do yourself a favor and skip it.
National Treasure: Edge of History (2022)
Pathetic Sequel
I tried to give 0 stars, but IMDB wouldn't allow it. Words cannot describe how terrible this series is. The acting, if you can call it acting, is horrendous and ridiculously over acted. I have no idea where the casting director found these actors, but they should be fired and never allowed on a project ever again. I really liked both National Treasure movies, and it's a shame that something this terrible uses the title. One thing that's incredibly annoying is the way the characters relate to each other. It's like their lives are entwined in an Instagram video and they have to over act at every scene. Terrible and unwatchable.
The Last Witness (2018)
Ignore the Bad Reviews
Ignore the bad reviews. This is a first rate movie that's incredibly suspenseful. I thought the acting was great and the story very disturbing. Can't wait to do more research on the facts behind this story.
No Time to Die (2021)
Meh. I expected more.
I love James Bond movies and I love Daniel Craig as James Bond. For me the 2006 version of Casino Royals was the best one of all time. This one was too long, the plot was too complicated, and the script was too rambling. I'll watch it again because I fell asleep a few times. Not in my top 10 of Bond movies.
Well, I tried to watch it again and two things happened. First, I didn't last 30 minutes because the movie is unwatchable. And second, I reduced my rating to a 2. Daniel Craig is terrible, the writing is awful, and the plot makes zero sense.
American Rust (2021)
Like Watching Corn Grow
I'm struggling with this. Love Jeff Daniels, but this story is really bad. I'll get through it, but it's tough.
Goliath (2016)
Season 4...Spectacular
Just finished watching Season 4 and it's incredible. Forget all the negative reviews. Jump into it and immerse yourself in Billy McBride's genius. I'll probably watch it again tonight...it was that good.
Nomadland (2020)
Second Time Is The Charm
I tried to watch this movie a month ago and couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. But tonight my wife and I were talking about the Academy Awards and I mentioned it to her. She wanted to see it so I gave it another shot. After 30 minutes we both wanted to turn it off because it's very depressing, but we stuck with it and thoroughly enjoyed it. In a weird way it's actually uplifting. Kudos to all the actors for a terrific movie.
The Gloaming (2020)
Effing Terrible
My wife and I have now tried on two separate occasions to watch this pathetic excuse for a series and have officially given up. I was the first to watch it and quit halfway through the second episode. I told her it was terrible so she gave it a shot. She watched the first episode and sort of liked it, so we gave it another shot. We watched the first episode, got halfway through the second episode when she turned to me and said turn it off, this is terrible. The writing sucks, the acting is terrible, and there isn't one likable character in the series. I'd rather watch corn grow than this miserable piece of crap.
Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)
Great. Great. Great.
Watched 3 episodes last night, just finished 5 this afternoon, and can't stop talking about. Lily Rabe is fabulous (as usual) but the rest of the cast is equally impressive. The plot is taut, the dialogue is quick, and it gets your attention right off the bat. I have no idea about some of the low ratings.
Your Honor (2020)
I Can't Watch This Show
This is the worst freaking series I've ever watched. I've been stuck on Episode 2 for a while and simply gave up. But we were on a Zoom call with friends who loved it so I decided to give it another shot. Big mistake.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Wow. Just Wow.
So my wife and I have pretty much maxed out on all the streaming channels. I told her about this movie and she said let's give it a shot, but for $20, let's watch the trailer first. After watching it she was kind of meh, but we decided to give it a shot. OMG, it's incredible. Massively twisted, but fast paced and incredibly well done. Carey Mulligan is brilliant and owns the movie, but the rest of the cast is terrific. Forget the mediocre reviews and forget some reviews that didn't like the ending. I'm going to watch it again either right now or tomorrow morning.
Ted Lasso (2020)
Can I Give Ted Lasso a 12?
This is the best series I've seen in the last 5 years and, aside from The Newsroom, the best series I've ever seen. I watched it in a little under 12 hours and am now re-watching it. There are so many great scenes, but the dart scene is the best. Jason Sudeikis steals the show in the starring role, but Hannah Waddingham is absolutely brilliant as the team owner, and the rest of the supporting cast is spectacular.
Ted Lasso is what we all need right now to get us through the rest of 2020. Thank you Apple TV, you knocked it out of the park on this one.
Industry (2020)
Unwatchable
I spent 25 years in investment banking and absolutely hate this series. I somehow managed to get through the first episode, but didn't get past the first 15 minutes of the second. The writing sucks, the actors are terrible, the story lines are insane, and it gives me a headache. Lena Dunham should start looking for a new line of work.
Lions for Lambs (2007)
Excellent Movie
Watching it now for probably the tenth time. Don't miss this one.
Away (2020)
I tried to watch it
This series is freaking terrible. Now I know why Netflix cancelled it. I love Hillary Swank and Josh Charles, but I couldn't take the terrible writing and the rest of the cast any longer.
Marriage Story (2019)
This Movie is Terrible
My wife saw it last week and thought it was terrible. I watched it tonight after the Oscar nominations and could barely get through it. There isn't one likable character in the movie. The plot is terrible and it's ridiculously depressing. Avoid it at all costs
The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019)
Spectacular Movie
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. And anyone who doesn't like this movie or who spends their time nitpicking it is a moron.
A Very British Christmas (2019)
A truly enjoyable movie
Watching it for the second time as I write this review. It's a fun, enjoyable movie with a interesting plot and terrific actors. Please ignore the lower rated reviews. There's no accounting for bad taste so I'll not even try.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Run, don't walk, to see this movie
Absolutely spectacular movie. Damon and Bale were fabulous and it's non stop action from the get go. Thoroughly enjoyable movie one of the best ones I've seen this year.
Echo in the Canyon (2018)
Boomer Review Here
Maureen Dowd has a piece in today's NYT where I learned a new expression, 'Ok Boomer'. As someone solidly in boomer territory, that's going to be one of my new expressions. Anyway, I watched Echo in the Canyon tonight and it's fabulous. I guarantee anyone who doesn't like this movie has to be under 50 years old.
Fool's Gold (2008)
Excellent Movie
Anyone who doesn't like this movie is incapable of having a good time.
Leap Year (2010)
Great Movie
I love this freaking movie and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
The Newsroom (2012)
Love it
I'm re-watch my favorite episodes whenever I get depressed over the current occupant in the WH. Would love to see Will McEvoy take on the Trump WH.
Legends of the Fall (1994)
It's Grown on Me
I've probably seen this movie, in whole or in part, over twenty times and I think it's one of the finest movies ever made. That's a far cry from my opinion of it when it first came out. My wife always thought it was fabulous, but my initial reaction was it's mediocre at best. I don't know why I thought that because I loved the cast, but there was something about how it hung together that bothered me. Anyway, that's in the past. I just finished watching it and am blown away by the quality of this movie.
