The Thin Red Line (1998)
A waste of time
Someone in their comments of this film mentions it's timing, that it came out at the same time as 'Saving Private Ryan'. Personally I wish it had never came out at all. I decided to watch it on video a while ago, and thought it was the most pointless war film I had ever seen at the time (The most pointless war film now is the 2005 effort 'The Last Drop'). I am not someone who has to have nonstop gore to enjoy a war film, if the story is good then that is fine by me. This film just didn't seem to have a story, it just seems to have been made as the directors own version of the Guadalcanal campaign, which doesn't seem to match the true story, (and yes I have read the book it is based on). The only level the film worked for me was as a travel brochure for a holiday to a tropical island.
The Last Drop (2006)
More like a 'War Picture Library' story than a serious War Movie.
Having read the other reviews of this film and noting the comments on continuity in one review, I would like to know why most of the characters in this film are Paratroopers. The Paras never arrived by glider, that is why they are trained as Paratroopers, so they can arrive by Parachute. At the time of Op. Market Garden (The time this film is set) the glider borne infantry (Which is what these characters should be) for 1st Airborne Division were :- 1st Battalion The Border Regiment, 2nd Battalion The South Staffordshire Regiment and 7th Battalion The King's Own Scottish Borderer's. The medic has Divisional insignia for 5th Infantry Division (Who at the time of Market Garden were in Palestine) The Jock has Divisional insignia for 3rd Infantry Division (Who were in NW Europe at the time, but were an ordinary Infantry Division and not Airborne). He also mentions that he is in the Black Watch Royal Engineers, no such regiment exists, it is either The Black Watch or The Royal Engineers.Anyway The Black Watch were not in 3rd Inf. Div., The only Scottish Regiment in the Div. were 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. This seemed to be a good story wasted, it is nice to see British Soldiers in WWII film, but next time please can we have a director who can direct and actors who can act.
