Highly entertaining

I have always loved comedies, screwball comedies in particular because of their fast paced and quippy nature. The dialog is better and more modern than in others of the same genre. The smart comebacks are enough to make any age laugh. It was extremely fast paced which cause your eyes to never leave the screen. Since this movie was post code era there was a lot the film could not do. However, it still remains hilarious. Another aspect I loved was the cinematography. Even though we spend most of our time in the news room, we never feel like we are stuck there. Different angles are used that leave each scene there feeling unique and it was a genius way to get the most out of one set. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoy comedies.

Dracula (1931)

Interesting film

I have recently become a fan of horror movies, so I was very excited to see this one. Since this movie is considered to be the birth of the horror genre I did have high expectations going into it. However, I personally thought the pace was a little slow, which made me not want to finish the movie. Also, this may just be my opinion, but the directors choice to have the actors look at an item out of frame and describe it to the audience rather than just show us the item I did not like. I felt that this added to the slow pace and made the movie slightly less enjoyable. This movie did have redeemable qualities though. The lack of score adds an extra sense of uncertainty that horror movies today strive for. The version that I saw did not have any added music, which I preferred for this type of film. Also, the lighting in this movie was brilliant. There are eerie shadows and bright lights that grab your attention. I think it was done very well.

Surprisingly enjoyed

I am not a fan of gangster type films. I'm not quite sure what it is, but they usually do not interest me. Despite this, I did enjoy this movie a lot. It was clear patterned after other gangster films of that time, which is to be expected. There was sharp editing and detailed special effects that helped create genuine thrills and surprises. What struck me the most was the lack of a sound track. Other than the band playing in the one scene there is no underlying music along with the dialog. Usually this leaves a film feeling slightly empty to me. However, the dialog used was plenty to keep my attention. Another thing that surprised me was the inclusion of so many female characters. In these gangster films, there is usually a male dominance and it was nice to see both major and minor female characters get screen time and dialog.

The Kid (1921)

Great Movie!

In the beginning of this movie, I really enjoy the unique ways the scene are changed. It's fading into each other rather than just cutting into the new scene. Also, the score for this movie already has me hooked on the movie itself even before the five minute mark. The music is very good at representing the emotions you're supposed to be feeling during the movie without being able to hear what is actually going on. I love how reluctant Chaplin is to take in the baby, but when he decides to take it home you can see his facial expressions become slightly softer, as if he's starting to like the child. The ways he attempts to care for the child are very unique and pleasant to watch. By the time it gets to 5 years later, the expressions by both actors let you know that they have gotten in sync with each other and have created a routine around each other. The scene where the child is making pancakes to me, proves how good he was raised and how responsible the kid is. Next, the entire time when the child was being taken away was very emotional, both the facial expressions and the score really add to the sadness of the scene. Jumping ahead to the end, I like ho wit was not given away that the policeman was taking Chaplin to see the kid, this sort of surprise at the end made me enjoy the movie more. I typically enjoy happy endings, so I was very glad that this movie had one. Overall, I really liked this movie. I am not the biggest fan of silent movies so I was pleasantly surprised to like this one. Most of my liking comes from the level of acting, great facial expressions, and coherence with the score.
