Beverly Hills Cowgirl Blues (1985)
A tongue in cheek look at LA in the guise of cops and robbers
I love the way that this movie pokes fun at the entire LA Hollywood dynamic. LA doesn't have Taxi drivers they're all writers or directors between jobs, everyones and actor just doing their day jobs. I cannot believe that no one else has commented on this movie, while its not the best movie ever made and I did come to the page to put in a continuity glitch, it is a fun movie that can't be accused of taking itself to seriously. It's a nice simple story... Amanda comes to LA to find the killer of her best friend and meets Harry a slick LA detective assigned to be her guide. As they track the killers they become closer to each other and fall in love. But its also a fun movie. I give it 8/10
Blake's 7 (1978)
It only gets better with time...
As a teenager I watched Blakes 7 and thought it was an ok show with bad low budget effects, especially the first season yet every time its aired I find myself drawn to watch it. Now many years after seeing it for the first time and seeing it with more mature eyes I find that it simply gets better and better every time I see it.
While the first season was not the best it did establish the Characters and set up the history of the Blakes 7 universe and plots to carry the show on into the future. From season 2 onwards the show seemed to get better every week only occasionally stumbling along the way with a few dull stories but what show has not done that from time to time. The show really hit its stride with the 3rd season.
The Finale at the end of season 4 has to be one of the best endings ever made for any show in any genre in Television History, and with out showing the death of Avon or confirming the deaths of any of the rest of the crew there is still a spark of a chance that the show could return if any of the rumors are true of Paul Darrow trying to revive the series set 20 years later. It would be nice to see it return because can you imagine what Blakes 7 would be like with a budget??? But if you have only seen the show once go back and watch it over you will not be sorry.
Traffic (2000)
One of the best movies I've seen this year...
Traffic is a fantastic fast paced story that just keeps you on the edge of your seat for the whole movie. With three great stories that never slow in there intensity . Director Steven Soderbergh tells a great set of stories in this film. The use of handheld cameras scene of the D.E.A bust and in the ensuing gun battle gives the story a frenzied pace and intensity not unlike the beach sequence in Saving Private Ryan. The Judges daughter as an addict is probably every parents nightmare, and the issue of the parents not being aware of a childs problem is obviously a common situation parents find themselves in as they become so caught up in their jobs, The Judge as the newly appointed head of the Drug task force at the White House doing exactly that and not seeing his daughters plight is a nice piece of irony within the story. The only real complaint I had was the story about the Mexican General enlisting the aid of Javier to take on the drug cartel and then his motive of being in the other cartel being revealed was a little to obvious, even though I tried to avoid reading to much about the movie and avoided looking at any spoilers it was still a little to pedictable. Benicio Del Toro as Javier Rodriguez Rodriguez good cop surrounded by corruption you knew he was going to stop at nothing to see that justice was done and that the General was brought to task for his crimes. Michael Douglas as Judge Wakefield the father who eventually comes through for his lost child, and realizes eventually that a job is only a job and is not as important as family. Catherine Zeta Jones as Helena Anala she showed an unexpected vicious streak after she was leaned on for money her husband owed the cartels and her son was threatened she played the vicious she wolf this was an amazing change from her normal role. Topher Grace as Seth he showed that he can play other types of role besides the good guy teenage characters like Eric Foreman in that 70's show and I look forward to seeing him in other movies. All in all a great movie that is worth seeing again and again and a video tape of this movie is definately destined for my video collection.
Do lok tin si (1995)
a real funny movie well worth seeing
I must admit that I would probably never have given this movie a second glance on a video store shelf. However I saw this funny movie today in a Film and Media class and loved it. The story is a bit hard to follow at times until you get used to the stories pace and quirky cast of characters. The story is interesting because of the way it goes from being serious with Wong Chi-Ming to being so funny with He Zhiwu and his unique approach to business as he never takes life too seriously, he is also the only character in the movie I found you could really like again this is probably due to his take on life. And the ice-cream truck now that was pure comedic insperation and the line " I don't want to die by ice-cream." to funny for words. This movie rates a big 8/10 and is well worth the 95min to watch it, and probably any other WongKar-Wai movies as well.
