Love at First Sight (2023)
Modern Serendipity
What is determined by fate and what is choice?
Do we lead our lives on statistics or by the desires of our hearts?
This film is a pure simple joy. For years I have been so desperate for a fresh take on a rom com, and honestly this was the cure. The premise is simple enough, and of course the ending is kind of what you expect, but the journey was quite surprising. The casting was absolute perfection, the chemistry between the two leads had me squealing and grinning from ear to ear like a big idiot. Also I adore Sally Phillips so huge win!
There are some really interesting philosophical takeaways from this if you care to scratch the surface a bit deeper, I think what is says about love and life is what will probably resonate the most. Also I love the fact that the script doesn't spell things out for the audience, it allows us to read between the lines. For example, when Hadley sees the picture of the clouds on the bus and she smiles, you know she's thinking about Oliver's comment about cumulus clouds. I feel like rom coms these days treat their audience like idiots and assume they won't be able to pick up on anything nuanced.
This was elegantly made, and an absolute joy to watch. Bravo!
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Masterpiece CGI for a nothing plot
I loved how beautiful it was. The CGI and cinematography is a work of art. Also, I saw it in the cinema which everyone should absolutely do! But the plot was such a snooze fest. Just insert any classic sequel plot - here's your hero, they've grown up, have a family, and there are some bad guys, the heroes are threatened, they have to fight back yada yada. I mentally clocked out a couple times only snap back into it and realise nothing had happened. At least the Aussie guy was entertaining.
Also it is looooong. So maybe that didn't help things. I can imagine watching this at home with an interval in between and enjoying it more.
Go see it for the visuals. Just don't prepare to use your brain understanding the story.
