Dreamcatcher (2003)
Interesting, weird, but not a standing ovation...
***MILD SPOILERS*** I went and saw this movie with my wife, who has read every Stephen King book to date. She told me that the movie did stick to the book fairly well, but, of course, I'm looking at the film from my perspective; someone who hasn't read the book. I thought that the beginning where Jonesy got hit by the car had a big disappointing plot hole. As hard as he was hit, I assumed he was about to die...permanently. Then all of a sudden it's 6 months later, and all he has is a limp. No scars or other permanent physical damage that would ensue from being hit by a car going roughly 35-45MPH. I even mentioned that to my wife and she said that the book told about how he got better...kinda lame that the film totally left that out. As far as the $hi+ weasles, I thought they were a very original idea (of course, Stephen King is VERY creative) and the CGI was really cool and realistic. I could see how having one of those things inside your gut would cause your abdomen swell up, but I don't see how it would cause someone to continuously belch and fart. Perhaps if I had read the book before I would have a little more insight, but I think that any good movie that is based on a book should be done so that people who haven't read the book aren't left in the dark on a lot of things. (i.e. Pet Sematery had an easy-to-follow plot, and the Green Mile, while it required a little more thought, was still an excellent movie where you don't have to read the book in order to get the big picture) Then again, I guess this would be the big picture for this movie: An alien comes to Earth "disguised" as a handicapped kid, gives "powers" to 4 kids that help him out, 20 years later these other aliens attack, the grown men go to a cabin in the woods, get a bad taste of the aliens, Duddits is brought back, he morphs back into an alien and saves the world. I guess I could give it a 6 out of 10 also, and I do agree with most of what everyone else has said about the ending. My main critique on this movie would be to get rid of some of the holes in the plot, and make that "Beav" guy not be obsessed with freakin' toothpicks!! If he would have stayed his @$$ on the toilet, he wouldn't have gotten killed!! All because of an obsession with toothpicks!! ;-)
The Pretender 2001 (2001)
Keeps me glued to the TV...
Ever since I saw this show for the first time, I've been hooked on it. I've always been a "junkie" for TV shows &/or movies that deal with a highly intelligent "good-guy" using his smarts along with strategy and technology to thwart the "bad-guys". Michael T. Weiss does an excellent job of portraying Jarod's character. I will continue to watch this show, and hope that the series continues. This is one of the better series that TNT has ever aired.
