Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (2018)
Good. Could have been much better
It's a remake alright. But that's probably the reason the movie falters. The remake has been "altered" to "suit" Tamil audience and hence slips into the boring category at times. The director is confused as to what direction he must be taking this movie in - movie with a message or a con-comedy movie. Unfortunately that weighs down the screenplay. The con scenes are well executed but the backstory and the message attempt fail to impress. Could have been much better has it been a con-comedy.
Sketch (2018)
A less than average "mass" movie
Interesting premise but too much cliche spoils the movie.
Midway through the first half boredom sets in and doesn't improve until the end. And suddenly out of the blue there is a twist at the end which becomes more of a joke than a twist.
Vikram chooses good movies but not sure what prompted him to pick a movie like this!!
Enthiran (2010)
Exceeding in every "bit"
I mentioned the word "bit" in the summary deliberately. There is a joke with that exact word as well in the movie. But my summary just sums up how I enjoyed the minute details of the movie while rejoicing in the marvelous and enthralling large scale experience. Starting with the mellowed opening scene, everything has been crafted neatly. Whenever the movie seemed like going overboard, the director stamps his touch and brings the movie back on the neat track. Kudos to Rajnikanth for not having let his "larger than the movie" image to interfere with the movie's plot. The first half simply flies by with the standard ingredients of an Indian film - introduction of characters, the feel good duet song between the lead pair, the powerful action sequence(this one stands outs from the other movies because of its grandeur), the villain's grudge. Among all this, there are jokes with the robotic and technical terminology - a reminder of late Sujatha's touch. And just to enhance the curiosity the director plants the plot's twist on the stroke of half time. The second half is something unseen on Indian movies so far. Not only has it exceeded anything that has been done in Indian movies before, it has also proved to be good. Exemplary CG is not something Indian movies can boast of. Most of the times, CG in India movies becomes laughing stock. But with "Endhiran" we may have just crossed over. Such is the technical brilliance in the second half that we can be forgiven if we assume what happens is true. One more factor about CG in Indian movies is that too many technical features is something the audience normally does not approve of. It is here that the super star comes to the fore. Having started his acting career more as a villain rather than a hero, the ease with which he carries out the negative role in the second half tides over the CG overdose. It was as if he had longed to play a negative role for long and had found the avenue in this movie. One must appreciate the movie's producers for having had the faith. They trusted Rajnikanth and Shankar without wincing even slightly. Then one must appreciate the director's faith in his own ideas. He decided to wait for the right opportunity to launch the movie and did not compromise the movie's plot for Rajnikanth's image. And finally one must appreciate the super star's faith in the director. He put his enormous image at stake to take up a role that could have been easily ridiculed. As for the other areas, the songs have been placed in such a way that they do not bore the audience. Rahman more than makes up for the average soundtrack with the rocking background score. Picturization is pleasant and the locations for a couple of songs are breath taking. Art direction is at its best throughout the movie. On the whole Endhiran simply scorches from start to finish and the participants in the movie have only helped in fanning the flame. Well done Shankar! Very well done Rajnikanth!!
Terminator Salvation (2009)
Did the war really end?
Well, the trailers of the movie sounded as if the war against machines was going to "end tonight". But none of that happened. And if you dig a little further into the Terminator movies, nothing actually happened in T4. While T1 and T3 were defining moments in the war against machines - T1 resulted in the birth of the resistance while T3 resulted in John becoming the leader of the resistance - T2 and T4 are just movies with a lot of action. There are no defining moments in these two movies. And there are a lot of similarities too - T1 and T3 showcased Terminators with absolutely no heart while T2 and T4 showcases humane terminators. I do not know if these were intentionally done and the makers of T4 succeed only on this front. I think that a very strong director can alone handle T5. Otherwise, the plot might be lost!
Sivaji (2007)
A horde of stars shine in Sivaji
Whenever there is a new Rajnikanth movie, everyone expects Rajni to carry the movie on his shoulder even if everything around fails. Over the past few years Rajnikanth has done exactly just that with the exception of "Baba" in which Rajnikanth also failed! But with Sivaji - The Boss, I expected Rajnikanth to share the burden with director Shankar. After all Shankar is someone who would leave no stone unturned. Somehow Shankar seems to have faded into the background. And instead, it's Rajini's co-stars that are carrying the movie along with Rajini. If Shreya sizzles in the songs, it's Vivek with his incredible timing in the comedy scenes taking the spot light away from Rajni. Rajni's movies are known for the comedy scenes mostly involving the super star himself. But uncharacteristically this movie has too many comedians thrust in - Solomon Pappaiah and Raja (from Sun TV "pattimandram"s) steal whatever Vivek leaves over! And then there is Suman (what a turnaround from "Thee" when he got to play the nice guy against Rajni) playing the villain with as much ease as he played those hero roles in Telegu and Tamil. With the huge build and the frightening dark glasses he shines when the pendulum swings his side. There is also a huge cast of characters appearing in single appearances like Vasu Vikram, Mayilsamy, Chinni Jeyanth and Dhamu to evoke the laughs in the very serious second half (not that the first half doesn't have serious scenes) - candidates for scene stealers. Not to forget guest appearances from Raghuvaran and Nayanthara, especially Nayanthara's appearance that injects a breath of fresh air into the opening song. AR Rehman keeps reminding us of his presence throughout the movie with background music to suit the situation. His background pieces for Rajnikanth lift the scenes effortlessly. The songs sizzle themselves with Rajni stretching himself to shake a leg in "Balleilaka", "Style" and "Athiradee" while the art director shines in the songs "Vaaji vaaji" and "Sahana". So much shine and you must be wondering - has Rajnikanth been lost in the glare. To an extent yes but he makes up with the last 30 minutes of the movie starting with the "Athiradee" song. I won't say anything more on this. You got to watch the movie to know what I say. And by doing so, the super star also joins the star cast in shouldering the movie and carrying it along to a happy ending. There is a saying "All is well that ends well". And by making himself prominent towards the end, Rajnikanth has scored yet another hit with Sivaji. As for Shankar..... We are waiting for your next movie Shankar! We know you will leave your mark!!
Charlie's Angels (2000)
Non stop fun and girlz
Great movie. I liked every bit of the movie. All I wanted was fun for each minute I watched the movie and got what I wanted.
Formula for a hot movie:Take a known plot. Add technological gizmos to it. Put dazzling babes on it. You have one hot movie in hand.
And thats what the producers have done. Three sizzling girls in their stylish costumes and accessories. The result is a roller coaster ride of a movie. When you come out of the theater after watching the movie there is nothing about the movie that stays for a long time in your mind. But then you are not worried about that. Because what you had inside the theater was simply great fun.
Cameron is hot, Drew is sexy and Lucy is fantastic Together they make Charlie's Angels worth a watch.
Stand Against Fear (1996)
Great movie
I don't remember the last time I have been sitting glued to my seat through the length of a movie on TV. I switch channels often, but this movie made me stay with the channel till it was over. It was a wonderful movie. The depiction of the struggle of Krista was so realistic. And this movie was more exciting than the slasher movies which usually center around school/ college students. Hope that people come up with more such movies.
