The Price We Pay (2022)
A fantastic gore fest
I really don't understand the bad reviews for this - what did you expect? It's a high energy, funny horror movie in the style of From dusk till dawn and Texas chain saw massacre!
It's pretty much wild action from the start, some mystery - which has a good payoff, and the final 'boss' has an unusual... twist.
Loads of crazy gore, good acting and a claustrophobic middle of nowhere setting.
If you enjoy these kinds of horror movies, and this one looks like it has a decent budget, then check it out. It's not the usual cheap, boring rubbish which so many direct to streaming movies are these days.
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Samaritan (2022)
What an unexpected fun comic book film!
I didn't even know Stallone was in this until I started watching it, but it's a comic book style movie done right, it's proper Stallone at his badass best.
It reminded me of many of the best 80s action films, and it even has a Robocop reference. If you like that type of film with an over the top bad guy and crazy comic book style violence you'll like this.
I actually checked how old Stallone was after watching this as he puts in quite the performance considering his age (76!) and yeah there are some deepfake style flashbacks which were expected with the plot and look fine.
This is a love letter to his 80s movies and if you grew up with them, you won't be disappointed.
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The Sand (2015)
Best bad film I've seen in years
I'm not sure if this was made to be bad, or is just a happy accident, but it works fantastically well. It's similar to Tremors and has just the same entertainment value, the action never stops and there are many laugh out loud moments (some intentional, some not!).
You will be entertained. It's now my favourite bad horror film! I know this is starting to get a cult following, and it totally deserves it.
Dark Sense (2019)
Indie film in need of a good editor!
This film has a good premise but it's so incredibly slow it's almost unwatchable.
There is a good film in here somewhere but it needs some serious editing down to actually be entertaining. Films don't HAVE to be at least 90mins long. It just feels like in order to reach 90mins they stretched out every shot they had, stuck in extra material and just used filler to make it longer. Shame.
For an indie film the lighting and filming is good, some of the acting a bit dodgy, but overall the crew seem to have known what they were doing. It's just a shame about the story itself. 3/10.
Possum (2018)
One of the scariest films I've seen in ages.
This is a genuine horror film. It's unpredictable and unsettling from the start. You might think, due to just how strange it initially appears, that it won't go anywhere and will suddenly end without any explanation. I feel I should tell you now that isn't what happens and it does have a satisfying conclusion.
Let's get something straight though - this isn't a Hollywood style horror, it's a harrowing and disturbing tale which will absolutely not be for everyone.
It's very original and has the feel of 1970's British horror, the set design is amazing and just the right amount of unsettling. I've now seen the film twice and have recommended it to all my true horror fan friends and it has gone down very well.
Turn the lights out, lie in bed and watch this one, but be warned you may not sleep due to watching out for those legs appearing over the end of your bed...
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Dreadful waste of your time
I expected to like this, the first half is interesting and you expect to be entertained for the second half... but it just becomes a mess which goes nowhere.
I refuse to pretend to like films just because other people claim they are 'genius' or 'amazing' - this film is just poor. I'm sure you can name many more awful films which are fashionable to claim you like, Donnie Darko et al.
If you have some spare time and want to see a spectacular failure of a film watch this, otherwise try something else.
Dead Frequency (2010)
Oh dear, oh dear.
Why oh why do people think they have what it takes to make films without any professional training? It's horribly clear from watching this film that they had no idea about lighting, depth of field, lenses, sound capture or even direction, I probably don't need to mention acting - just watch the trailer.
Another embarrassing northern amateur film which really does give the amateur scene a bad name. The fact they set up a premier locally and presented this as a quality film is astonishing. It was, to say the least, awkward.
I also suspect that people involved in this film have posted reviews on this site, it just makes it all the more cringe worthy.
Please don't encourage this 'director' to made anymore rubbish.
He needs to go back to his day job, and yes, I'm quite sure he has one and I'm most certain that it has nothing to do with making movies.
The One Game (1988)
Amazing, why was this only ever shown once?
While it is astonishing that this was never repeated on TV (I wonder why?) it does add to the attraction of obtaining it, which took me until the DVD was finally released some 18 years after the one and only broadcast.
While 'The One Game' does have some serious plot holes (Especially regarding certain deaths which are never revisited) it is still an excellent mini-series and has not dated as much as I expected.
I suppose it can be compared to 'The Game (1997)' and while it is almost certain that the writers of that 'borrowed' some ideas, they are not entirely the same. If anything 'The One Game' is a much better written and paced story with a lot more depth.
If you can find the DVD get it - it only cost me £6.99 and is well worth it for a 4 hour mini series - and it includes a nice booklet with a history on the show, I guess they decided to include the booklet rather than have it as an extra on the DVD - i'm glad they did, it is much nicer to read a booklet than a screen full of text.
But oh god - those pre-episode recaps - we could have done without those, what were they thinking!
Drive (1998)
Expect the unexpected.
I saw this little gem on channel4 at about 3am. Its very short, very action packed and very good. Not a word is spoken, but that makes no difference to the interesting plot and unexpected ending. Well worth 13minutes of your time. The director should put this film online, it deserves more exposure than it has received.
