Gangpae sueob (1996)
good stuff
interesting interpolation of korean mobsters into the japanese yakuza underworld. half of the film is in japanese and features that one guy from all those japanese gangster movies.there is some stuff in this movie that are kind of hokey by international film standards but korean people will recognize that it's done ironically. anyway, it's worth a watch.
Fighting Grandpa (1998)
good stuff
I saw this on PBS by chance. Very moving personal documentary from a promising young director. Generally speaking, the old school love depicted between his grandparents is subtle and hard to understand if you're not Korean. But Pak makes it easy to understand. I recommend it.
Romeo Must Die (2000)
Great action movie, two families, bound by tradition, are locked in a brutal war.
Good movie. Great action scenes between Jet Li and various punching bags. Martial arts scenes choreographed by Corey Yuen, the master fight choreographer who made his mark on American cinema with "The Matrix."
Interesting premise that sets Black against Asian with the "(White) Man" looming in the background. Very, very loosely based on Shakespeare's classic.
Rapper DMX makes only two cameo appearances in the film.
A Civil Action (1998)
A Civil Action misses the mark
A Civil Action is based on a bestselling book, which I read before I watched the movie. As is always the case, the book was better. However, I think many aspects of A Civil Action could have been easily made. I will not go into detail about that now, because I am tired. Kudos for the cinematography.
