A valentine for juveniles.
3 April 2017
A catchy film that hearkens back to the old B&W juvenile films of the 50s and 60s. The soundtrack also reminds one of the works of Bernard Herrmann, Danny Elfman (Beetlejuice) as well as The West Side Story. I had a chance to speak to Mr. Bunnell and found him to be the real deal. Considerate and passionate about the trade, he was very gracious with his time spent with me. If you ever get the chance to screen this film at a theater, by all means, do so. Run, don't walk!

Over There (2005)
Bochco botched it.
11 August 2005
This show can't be more obviously the Left's idea of reality TV. You know, like The West Wing. Leftists will tout that it's based in fact, even when they have gotten no closer to Iraq than filling their gas tanks. It'll be as popular as Air America. It's funny that Mr. Bochco has had the chance to tour Iraq and see for himself what's going on, but I guess he has seen what he wants to see, and he'll make up the rest. Sean Penn has made it a point that he's been to Iraq, especially after Air America was released, but he just put on his idealogical blinders. I guess Bochco has taken a few tips from Michael Moore, or maybe even Dan Rather. Those two as well as others in the Old Media don't report the news as much as provide newsatorials.

A Somewhat Flawed Gem
30 November 2002
I recently saw this movie again on TV and my opinion hasn't changed on it one bit. A small masterpiece in every way...except for the politically-correct (read: heavy-handed) way that guns are portrayed. It somewhat bothered me in the theatre, and seeing it on TV only reinforced the feeling. The only instances of gun use in the movie, including the toy one that Hogarth uses, were correct and not objectionable in the least. But the writers just had to hammer their point home.

Oh, well. I found the movie a rare gem and still cannot understand why it wasn't a smash. Maybe it was over a lot of heads. I even bought a copy, despite the not-so-subtle messages. Buy it when you find it. It's definitely worth it.

A very good fetish film.
5 January 2002
Darla Crane is blessed with good looks and the ability to be a stern dominatrix, a girl-next-door, or a sweet submissive. This film portrays her as a submissive in a wide variety of costumes and personas. You can still find this film with a little looking, and for bondage fetishists, it is well worth it.

Trail of Tears (1995 TV Movie)

A real snooze.
25 November 2001
A TV movie that will no doubt please the easily amused. This flick tries to be a fem buddy film as well as one with an important message about husbands kidnapping the kids. The male roles are either one-dimensional or idiotic. The women laugh, cry and bond. I'm not even sure the more strident feminists will enjoy this one. Pass this one up, and go outside and play. ZZZZZZZZzzzzzz.

A nice way to spend a Saturday night.
25 November 2001
I started taking in this flick in '82. 800 screenings later, I've finally retired from the weekly shows. But for a great way to let it all hang out in public and not get yourself arrested, by all means, catch this one in a theatre. It's very '70's and today's viewers may not get all the jokes, but it's still a lot of fun. With all the friends I've made over the years watching Rocky, it's another aspect of the film that makes it uniquely enjoyable. I'm still amazed it's lasted this long. It's definitely earned itself a niche in kitsch. To all the fans past and present, and to Sal Piro, thanks! Give yourselves a Rocky cheer. If you haven't yet discovered it, take a Saturday night and enjoy. Better bring the newspaper!

Cheesy, but fun.
30 October 2001
I caught this one on cable on a slow night. Sure, it was cheesy and moronic, but you knew that. The flick never took itself seriously and that's what made it OK with me. There are far worse movies out there that pretend to be funny while trying to pose as comedies.

The Ripping Friends (2001–2002)
More Kricfalusi lunacy
7 October 2001
Ren and Stimpy just wasn't the same when John K. left. Now is another chance to show off his special brand of 'toon. His type of twisted humor was a welcome relief to the tapioca sameness of typical animated offerings. I hope the politically correct Fox network keeps the Ripping Friends around awhile.

An underrated treasure.
3 March 2001
I was never fortunate enough to catch this film on the big screen. However, I did see it on cable in '86 and have been keeping my eyes open for a copy ever since. Having found an old bootleg recently, I was pleased that the animation is still truly amazing and has held up well over the years. The soundtrack is equally fine. Being a fan of stories with an apocolyptic bent, I really enjoyed this particular film. My friends and I still quote various parts of the film even after all this time. While the story is a little short, I feel it captures some of the frustration of being in a small-town band that is trying to break out. That and the fact this band must battle a vast evil is an interesting angle. Please won't someone re-release this diamond in the rough?

Funnier every time
12 February 2001
To me, this is one of those rare films that get funnier every time I see it. Maybe it's because some of the jokes are subtler than usual while the slapstick is pure Brooks. I'm a long-time fan of sci-fi and the spoofs to me are on target. While some of the language is salty, it only adds to the humor, much like it does on Brooks' "Blazing Saddles". Definitely worth seeing.
