Magnolia (1999)
Spectacular, although I see the "language" issue has bothered some people.
Before I say anything, I'd like to thank 39 steps (see below) as I'm going to take a similar approach. Rather than de-construct the film (and I gave it a 10) I'd like to ask the audience some questions. First, however, I'd like to address the "language" issue. You can either accept that some people actually DO use the "F" word and slang terms for genitalia and go on and enjoy the film, or avoid it. If that aspect of reality disturbs you, you have the right to avoid the movie (movies these days DO have ratings, so don't complain about such things as though you've been victimized).
Anyway, some questions: Ever heard of quantum theory; the interconnectedness of all things? You might want to read "The Holographic Universe" then go back and watch the movie again. Perhaps the simultaneous singing part won't trouble some of you so much. As others have cited, the "Sins of the Father" message was pretty strong throughout the movie. I see that's caused some religious discussions. Fair enough.
So now then: Ever seen something happen that you cannot explain? Ever seen two people pick up a large person or object using only two fingers? I have and I know others who have, and to this day I cannot explain it. Strange things DO happen all the time. Ever heard about discoveries of scientific significance that happen simultaneously at several places around the globe without any contact between the research groups? Ever seen someone heal another person? Ever seen or heard of spontaneous disappearance of a tumor? I have. How does that happen? I don't know and neither does my aunt, but it happened; overnight. Western medicine and science is at a loss to explain most things. The physical models we build in an attempt to understand life and the universe are just that, man-made models. How many times in the past has science and medicine been proved wrong? If any of us think we have all the answers, then we are without hope. Perhaps there is a reason for everything that happens and we simply cannot understand the reasons for some (or all?) of them.
As Dennis Miller says: "That's just my opinion. I could be wrong".
Peace.
Inspector Clouseau (1968)
Vastly underrated comedy
I had always been a fan of Peter Sellers' Pink Panther movies. Alan Arkin, however, made an excellent Clouseau. Lots of great quotable lines and holds up under repeat viewing.Actually better than some of the later Peter Sellers versions.
