Dune (2000)

Pure and complete C***

Since when does Paul Whine....ever? Bad Acting, Awful Costume Choices, and obvious budget constraints make this even more of an injustice than the original movie. BAH! I really really wanted to like this, but it seems we will never get a good version of this Masterpiece.

um..Wowser?

I'm truly torn about this movie. While parts of it were very funny......it really wasn't Gadget. Having grown up on the cartoon....I missed Quimby getting blown up...and Penny's book....and Where the HECK was MAD? Making "Claw"(another wincer) a businessman was just a bad idea.

Matthew Broderick was at least likable, and The two best touches in the movie: Don West's voice, and the henchmen meeting.

The Matrix (1999)

Live action Anime tour de force
1 April 1999
Since the Bill and Ted movies, I have not had an occasion to watch a movie and feel that Keanu Reeves was appropriately cast. Now, I have another reason to state this. The Matrix is a High-Energy, fun, and visually stunning movie, but with an actual plot. The Wachowski brothers have pulled off what I had thought impossible and made a realistic looking Live-Action Anime. I truly recommend this movie to any sci-fi, anime, or action buff out there, even if it does tend to get a little heavy handed at times. Oh, and see the "Gap Effect" used better then I've ever seen before, the effects artists prove that you don't have to be stationary for it to look good. I give it 3/4 stars.

Vampires (1998)

Way too Rushed
2 November 1998
Let me start by saying that this movie was pretty good, not great by any means, but it had the potential. James Woods, as usual, is just plain cool, but that doesn't make up for the fact that this movie seemed to have about 30 minutes in the wrong place. The problem is, they spent too much time on trying to make you like Daniel Baldwin and Sheryl Lee and not enough on, well, Vampires.

The opening few scenes are great, right up until they escape from the Motel, and then it grinds to a terrible pace. For a long time, this movie seems forced, like they were trying to fill time, which is always a bad thing. And just when it starts to pick up again, you get to the end. This movie would have been MUCH better if they had cut out some of the Middle, and made the ending longer, not just a short, predictable bit of screen time. I mean, there was no suspense at the end, it seemed like they shot, and shot, and shot and said 'Oh wait, we need an ending.' Maybe that would explain why it felt like the ending of a TV movie.

My take: **1/2 out of ****

Fizzle of the North Star
29 September 1998
Ok... Here's the only way to describe this movie: "auuggghhh". When I saw this movie was on, I almost turned the channel, I didn't want to see the Anime ruined...but then I decided to just sit back and hope for the mediocre. And that's ALMOST what I got.

I have a few problems with this movie:

1. Why are 90% the guys with Japanese names British?

2. Why do the two "Masters" keep using the same moves?

3. Why can't Chris Penn ever play someone who ISN'T Psycho?

4. Why does Malcom Macdowell Always show up in these pictures?

5. I never thought I'd see a movie that had fight scenes that made American Ninja look like a Jackie Chan Flick.

Now, that's not to say that this picture doesn't have it's good points. There ARE actually a few things going for it. First of all, there is a High production value at work here. Every shot seems framed well, and the sets and costumes are extremely well done. Also, the score is quite complimentary (if not seeming ripped off at times). Acid rain. No, really, TRULY acid rain.

Sadly, it's the Acid rain that says it the best. *fizzle*

Rush Hour (1998)
10/10
A great mix of Action and Comedy
20 September 1998
What "Rush Hour" has best going for it, is the teaming of Chan and Tucker. Jackie Chan, Arguably the greatest Hong Kong Mega-Star, has a great on-screen rapport with Chris Tucker, and that makes this movie work. From start to finish, this movie had me laughing. I expected it to be funny, but not THAT funny. Jackie Chan really shines in this, I think mainly because he didn't have to carry the film by himself, which most of his Hong Kong movies seem to need. Chris Tucker is extremely well cast in this, and shows off his talent for fast-paced humor once again. All in all, this film is well worth going to see, especially if you are a fan of Action/Comedy. I give it four stars, and hope to see more movies like this in the future!

A great comedy
13 August 1998
OK, think me strange, but this is my favorite type of comedy. The whole point of a Comedy is to Entertain, and this movie goes above and beyond the call of duty to do just that. This isn't a movie for the weak of stomach, no, but that's half of the fun. Trey Parker and Matt Stone do much better jobs than I could have imagined, and David Zucker proves again that he is one of the great comedy Directors.

Complete Waste of Budget
13 August 1998
Let me Start by saying I really, truly, and without a doubt mean every word I am going to say here:

What is so special about this movie?!@# This has got to be the longest, most pathetic, boring excuse for Oscar Bait I have ever seen, and that's even comparing it to some of the other doozies that Hollywood has honored in the past. First of all, Leonardo Can't act to save his life. What was the official word at the casting call? "Must be able to stand in front of the camera and bring in teenage women"? And Kate Winslet, who I have respected in the past, completely lost her abilities as well. You wait two hours for anything to happen, and when it does, it happens so slowly that I hardly even noticed. As for the special Effects, I've seen better Special Effects in movies with MUCH smaller budgets. Want to know what the best part of the movie was? When I went to go see it, right before the end credits, the film melted and the projector caught on fire. I was quite happy to realise that a copy had been partially destroyed. This is a terrible excuse for a film. How can you not agree when the machinery showing it commits suicide??

Jackie Chan Does it again.
13 August 1998
What's truly great about Jackie Chan is that even in a movie that has no other redeeming qualities he can make you want to see the movie again and again. The movie itself is not that great, the acting is bad and the plot is extremely pathetic, but Jackie shows off how likable he is again. Between great stunt sequences and great humourous scenes, Jackie keeps you interested. Here's to more Jackie Chan Movies!
