My First Mister (2001)
This movie touched me in that special place.
Leslee is a unique and gifted actress. Albert Brooks is one of the greats. Together, with a refreshing story, echoing "Ghost World", they pulled me into their characters. I recommend watching it by yourself. You'll enjoy it more.

Thick as Thieves (1999)
This was one of those.
This ranks up there with "Freeway" and "Truth or Consequences, NM" as far as pleasant surprises go. Those movies with semi-interesting covers at the video store that you chck out on a whim. The ones you really know nothing about, and sit there slack-jawed half way through the movie wondering if it can really continue to be this good until the end, and then nearly shiz yourself when it actually is.
This was one of those.
Only I'd first heard about it from the Sundance film guide, and I rented it through Netflix. I knew Alec Baldwin was the main star, but that can be good or bad... that was about it.
Now don't go in expecting some kind of The English Patient granduer - just renting the friggin' movie, eat your salty snack, sip your icey beverage, and enjoy a good crime movie.
I'd never heard of the director, so I looked him up...Nothing. he's done nothing else, and has nothing in the can. Somebody find this guy, cause he put together a very smooth, nearly perfect movie. Alec was in excellent form. The supporting actors did a hell of a job. The plot AND sub plots were timely and substantial. Just the right amount of humor too. Now I got to wait another year or so for my next pleasant surprise.

Black and White (1999)
peephole into the lives of todays hip hop culture B+
Black and White is a kind of peephole into the lives of todays hip hop culture, how white kids take upon themselves the black culture, and how black kids interact with them. It's part rap video, part documentary, part improvisation, and part Boyz in the Hood.
You got all kinds of stars in this movie, some playing themselves: Mike Tyson (who is great), Wu-Tang Clan, and others, and a mess of actors: Robert Downey Jr (One of my all time favorties), Claudia Schiffer, Ben Stiller, Jared Leto, Brooke Shields, Bijou Phillips, Elijah Wood, and a ton of others I can't think of.
I thought I wouldn't like this movie, but I rented it anyway, and I'm glad. It was an interesting and different project, and I liked it. Most of the scenes and dialogue were done impromtu, and some great moments result. I can watch Robert Downey go off the cuff anyday. "Two Guys and a Girl" is a perfect example. He's a master, and I really hope he can stay clean before his life gets too screwed up.
