Burke: Ho-ho-hold on one second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it.
Ripley: They can bill me.

Phil: I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl. We ate lobster and drank pina coladas. At sunset we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over and over and over...

Thinking XXX (2004)
Fascinating if you are into porn
It is amazing to watch this show and see all of these very popular porn stars being interviewed and photographed out-of-character, as actors rather than characters in a porn video. Any Tera Patrick fan will be amazed to see how wholesome looking she is when she is not in porn makeup and a porn wig. After seeing this you will believe it when you hear that she was a pre-med college student before she started in the biz (it's true).
After seeing the show I bought the book that it is about, "XXX 30 Porn-Star Portraits", and it is as amazing as you'd think. The Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is a great photographer, and these are all great photographs. Also fun area all the essays throughout and the auto-biographical entries in the back.
Porn stars may be odd people, but they are real people, as you will find when if you watch this show and read (and look at) the book.
Serenity (2005)
A Star Wars for the new millennium
The original Star Wars movies were break-through movies that combined sci-fi with a raucous adventure story. The recent 3 Star Wars films were lame by comparison, with a heavy-handed story and incredibly bad dialog. Yes they had lots of fights and battles and great special effects, but the fun was gone.
Serenity brings us back to an original style of adventure and other-worldliness. I don't say sci-fi because that it is much more part of the setting than part of the story. The movie is based on characters and plot, and the sci-fi is used just to open up more possibilities in the story telling and adventure.
Eye of the Beholder (1999)
Intriguing and beguiling
Definitely not for everyone, but a good movie. I think the low overall score for this movie indicates not that it is a bad movie, but that a lot of people saw it that shouldn't have. In my view there is nothing not to like about this movie. Then again, as Lucky Legs would say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Timecode (2000)
An intense audio-visual experience
Paradoxically, I found Timecode both exhausting and energizing, but the bottom line is that although this is a movie that is clearly going to hit everyone a different way, I loved it.
Some of the people that were in the theatre with me walked out, but most were expressing emotions that betrayed the powerful impact of this fascinating movie. They laughed, they sobbed, they cried out. Everyone stayed through the closing credits, and several people, including me, were so shocked and drained that they sat in their seats for minutes after the credits were over.
Watching four screens simultaneously was almost like being in a grand prix automobile race, having to keep yours eyes on all your mirrors to keep track of the other cars around you, versus the usual movie experience of leisurely driving down a one-lane one-way road, looking straight ahead in a totally passive way.
Another way to look at is that the four-fold multiplexing compresses time; in effect you are watching a 6 hour movie in an hour and a half.
As a guideline, I would recommend that anyone that has a problem with watching subtitled foreign language films skip Timecode; but, for those of you looking for an intense and totally absorbing movie experience, I recommend this movie highly.
Playing by Heart (1998)
Angelina Jolie makes this movie great!
I rated this movie 9/10. I've read praise for it, but many people say that Sean Connery and Gena Rolands carry it. They were good, but certainly nothing to get excited about. On the other hand, every time Angelina Jolie smiled it was a magical movie moment! I've seen two of her other movies, "Gia" and "Pushing Tin", where she was also very good, but in "Playing by Heart" she really shines. If anyone has any of her other movies to recommend to me, as a Jolie fan, let me know. "Fox Fire"? "Hackers"? I'm certainly looking forward to her upcoming roles, such as "Girl, Interrupted".
Otherwise I found the movie a bit meandering, with such a big ensemble of well-known stars, but by the end of the movie I felt that the many threads had all been brought to interesting resolutions. Altogether, I would recommend this movie highly to anyone looking for a thoughtful light drama.
Groundhog Day (1993)
My favorite movie of all time. Watch this movie!
This movie nothing short of fantastic -- one of the most under-rated movies of all time. I've watched it more than a dozen times, and I'll never tire of it. It is totally entertaining, totally thought provoking, and totally inspirational. Every time I watch it I feel like a new man, with a new day before me in which I can do anything I want. What a feeling! My hat is off to Harold Ramis, Danny Rubin, Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.
Go for it! Watch this movie!
