A promising start
tronba23 January 2020
I was never a fan of J. J. Abrams and Kurtzman's interpretation of Star Trek, especially Star Trek Discovery. I did not feel that they were able to catch the spirit or soul of Star Trek. So I feared what this series might become. So far, I'm impressed. Sir Patrick Stewart reprises his famous role as Picard, and the start of this series is looking very promising. Good actors and a plot that's not rushed (to much) and has some depth and heart give me hope that this might be a good one.

This is good!

Now that's what I call a good pilot episode. You know from the start of the episode that this is a well written story. Very good start af the season. I had some doubts after the blunder of discovery... but this is what we've been waiting for! Already looking forward to episode 2!

Strange but fitting
sequbu17 January 2020
Only the first episode of a very anticipated show, yet people have a lot of doubt about it, after having been disappointed by Discovery.

In the back of our mind we have that man full of confidence, determination that is the master of the situation, the Captain we all knew till Nemesis.

But now Picard is 94 years old and one can tell, he isn't the fittest any more and as Patrick Steward put it, Picard is old, disappointed, he has lost his way, and you can tell.

This situation in which Picard is, sets it up for a great new Trek show that goes very much back to what Trek is, exploring humanity and exploring how to overcome our limitations.

Earl Grey Never Fails

THAT was awesome. I think that I cried throughout the entire episode. It was like visiting with an old old friend, a family member whom I never thought that I would see again. The writing, the acting, the directing, the cinematography, and the return of Jean-Luc was everything that I hoped for and beyond. Patrick Stewart and Picard do not disappoint. Bravo!

I can't wait until the next episode. Engage!

A very nice start

Warning: Spoilers
Long time star trek fan who looked forward to "STD" and tried to love it, but lost interest after about 1-2 episodes.

STP (are we going to go with that???) is different. It's fresh, fast paced, mysterious and so far, fun. Picard is likable if no longer invincible, as we saw him getting winded going up a flight of stairs.

And there's something dark in star fleet now, and nobody trusts androids and Picard is haunted by his memories and he says a moving line about 3/4ths of the way in. "I've not been living".

Too early to say which way the show will go and if it will maintain it's suspense but I'm hooked so far, Interesting new ideas, boldly going where we've not gone before. Looking forward to episode 2 in 7 days.

Surprisingly good, so far.
jonathan55723 January 2020
Sir Patrick is back in full form, while the episode does have a nice bit of action in it - it seems much more story focused than something like Discovery.

My fears have mostly been assuaged with this premiere, there is nice fan-service while still delivering an interesting storyline.

Hopefully this trend continues with the rest of the series, but I'd recommend at least a watch to any Trekkies (including those who did not enjoy Discovery as much as the old Treks)

A great start to the Picard saga.
AndersSTHLM23 January 2020
Patrick Stewart is one of my favorite actors and he doesn't let you down. After the first episode I'm more then satisfied. This is another great series of Star Trek made with modern effects and it is for me a 10 of 10. Let's hope the rest of the season keeps up the same quality.

Return of the KIng

SNG will always be my favorite of the whole canon. Here, Patrick Stewart never for a moment tries to be something he is not. Picard's character is in the twilight of his years. He is slow and tired but has that amazing gift of language and depth of character. I thought it was wonderful to incorporate a set of circumstances that occurred in that twenty year period that has passed. To see Brent Spiner again as Commander Data gave me goosebumps. For you naysayers. I am so looking forward to seeing this play out. To give this a 1 is a reflection on you, not on the show.

Better than expected
Wag66923 January 2020
After watching the first episode, I am very excited with this show. Looks very promising and more single story oriented, compared to ST-Discovery. Seeing Picard in a new Star Trek show is so exciting!!! Can't wait for the next episode

I only wish they had released all episodes in one day, so I could binge watch it.

Warning: Spoilers
It did not live up to the hype, but there is potential here. I think CBS learned some of the mistakes from Star Trek: Discovery, but ran into the same problems in a lot of ways too.

We don't need action, we need moral quandaries and Star Trekian storylines.

It's been long 19 years since last Star Trek

Finally they made a new Star Trek show. Thanks for that. Episode is so well written, beautiful, down to Earth (as they say), intriguing.. Almost brought tear to my eyes a few times. Hope to see Data more often, not just as a guest star...

Patrick Stewart carries this one
metzelmax23 January 2020
Every scene with Picard in it is great and reminds me a lot of Logan. If they'd gone that road of a thoughtful slow show about an old man coping with his past, it be an easy 10/10.

But then we also get ninja cyborgs... which ok, I get that CBS is too afraid to make a series without action at all.

But the Sci in this SciFi series is still as flimsy as it was in Discovery. Especially the entire scene in the Daystrom Institute is just really bad. And as a result the dialogue is also really bad and vague.

But overall this is a promising start.

It felt like a first draft
YakobBell1328 January 2020
Almost every character, every line of dialogue, was a cliche in some way. Performances were pretty lackluster. Ultimately, the story felt rushed and the plot was uninteresting, and the whole thing was dull and dragged because of this. The cinematography was alright though, although I always find it frustrating when TV shows use black bars to make it feel more 'cinematic', when all it does is get rid of half of the space on a television screen, and make it feel SMALLER, rather than grander.

Dont understand how it's getting all these rave reviews.

It's still hard to tell where it's going but it's competent television.
Kevin-4225 January 2020
We get a lot of memberberries in this one for old fans of 'The Next Generation', like little bits and pieces. In a way as Picard looks back on his life we look back at our memories about the show. The rest of this episode basically is a setup for things to come. Certain things are alluded to without providing a lot of detail but we get a nicely shot mystery box of plot elements which left me cautiously optimistic about the show and - as for now - wanting more of it.

Strong start to a series and great to see Patrick Stewart back
snoozejonc23 February 2021
Retired Starfleet Admiral Picard receives an unexpected visitor.

I enjoyed this episode for the return of Jean-Luc Picard and a strong hook into an intriguing story.

The plot was fairly slow paced but it drew me in with some decent scene setting for Picard's character and the introduction of a fairly compelling mystery. There are a few sequences of pure exposition, but they are handled well. I liked the sci-fi concepts and the final reveal was pretty cool.

It touches on themes of grief, loneliness and xenophobia, but nothing is thoroughly revealed at this early point in the overarching series narrative.

Visually it is much stronger than the Treks of old, as to be expected, with cinematography and general production values so much higher nowadays. All the martial arts felt a bit forced, but aside from that I have no complaints.

Patrick Stewart looks a little bit frail but his performance is as compelling as ever. He is an ageing, haunted Picard, searching for purpose in what's left of his life. I always pictured him ending up this way when watching TNG.

As first episodes go in Star Trek, I found this to be one of the better ones.

Amazing!
treatchristian23 January 2020
I was really concerned about the quality of this show and how "Star Trekky" it would feel... turns out, this show is amazing and I feel like it is part of the Star Trek universe. I can't wait to watch more! Finally, some excellent 24th-25th century federation content!

FINALLY !!!
Quarkp24 January 2020
I have been waiting since may 2005 to watch a new Star Trek show (or movie), since the last episode of Enterprise ! It's like meeting an old friend you haven't seen for a long time and continue the conversation you were having as if no time has passed. I can't wait to watch the next episode.

This show is awesome, the pilot raised so much questions that need answers.

Fantastic opener!!
WKYanks24 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Just fantastic!! Super excited to see the rest!

Starting off with a poker game. Perfect.

Data was used expertly I thought. Not hitting your head over it but used in context beautifully.

Was this his brother's vineyard?

I think this opener did what it needed to do. Filled us in on the past and reintroduced us to Picard. The synthetic thing really surprised me. It also surprised me that Star Fleet got cold feet... I think they could have mentioned Spock's effort to stop the supernova. This did, of course, validate the "Kelvin" timeline. (as much as I hate calling it that) I like the look of the show.

The interview was a perfect way to fill us in. Dunkirk was perfect too. I only got the reference because of the recent movie.

Taj wasn't activated? .... hmmm... intriguing.

A tremendous job with the fight scenes I thought. The only part that caught my eye in a bad way was when she blew up and Picard was blasted what, 75+ feet? .... he's 80 you know ...

Was there an episode in TNG where Data actually painted that picture?

I got a little sentimental when Picard went into the storage room...

Nice insertion of Mattox I thought (someone that 99% of trekkies hate). It looks like he continued his work after synthetics were banned... made himself a couple of synthetics. Data is still unique and B4 couldn't handle the download during Nemesis. (THANK YOU!)

Flesh android? ... Why ban androids and not holograms?

Nice to see a couple of Romulans living with Picard.

I like the actress that plays Dr. Asher (Soji).

Then, of course, the big reveal at the end showing us a "Romulan Reclamation Center" (Borg cube).

The theme didn't grab me as the Discovery theme did. Not bad of course, (not Faith of the Heart for sure) but nothing special. I'm sure I'll grow to love it.

I can't wait to meet the rest of the regulars and get this show on the road.

I'm glad they release these earlier. I hated having to wait until 8:30 for a new episode of Discovery.

An easy 4-star opener for me.

Make it so!!

Picard- Yes, Star Trek- ... maybe... ??
haktylalkesh24 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
After watching the trailers for this I got mildy excited. Mostly because I did not want to jinx it before the show came out because of the mess that is discovery.

And after watching the first episode I'm feeling ... confused.

+ Patrick Stewart carries the episode. We get some nice dream sequences, obviously good acting and the start of a psychological introspection that I hope will be explored more rigorously.

+ The Borg Qube. Amazing to see it in 2020 graphics.

+ Part of the Romulan storyline. On the whole the romulans feel okay. THem taking over a qube is at least in line with previously conceived ideas that were expanded in books and STO and the romulan ships have evolved in a plausable manner aswell. Only issue is with the looks. I mean they did it for what, around 20+ years, the makeup cannot be that hard to get right.

  • The writing. The writing and the story in general in this episode is just sloppy and lackluster. 85% of the conversations are incredebly boring and just bad dialogue. Unfortunately (or fortunately) most the bad lines were given to the new characters, the main one being Dahj. Overall the story seemed to develop way too fast. No time was given to flesh out a solid base for the show to continue on. Picards dialogue with Dahj just unbelivable even on a make-belief story level. Sci fi has always been about good writing with good writers especially Star Trek so it is a shame to see the few sci-fi series today, this first episode included, does not seem to be able to reach the heights of previous shows.

  • The characters. So far only Picard has kept the interest in the show for me. Dahj is supposed to be the second main character but the writing makes her an extremely shallow version of Lal, who only appeard in 1 (!) episode. The acting was okay considering the horrible lines the actress had to work with. Dr. Jurati was even more hollow hopefully they'll fix that in the coming episodes.

  • The astethics. Okay being a graphics I always give shows a little leeway when it comes to astethics. I liked the Romulan warbirds and the borg cube and starfleet archives. My main issues was again with the makeup of alien characters and the weird inclusion of flying drones anywhere. WHen did that become a thing? I mean wouldn't starfleet have used them previously if they were in anyway sufficient? Also the Tv's were a weird addition. I get that at starfleet hq and other public areas there would be some news announcement stations but as is at least one or twice mentioned in both TNG and VOY recreation through devices such as a TV is a thing of the past and humanity is no longer concerned with such a device. Plus they've got holodecks.

  • The Theme. The theme is probably my biggest issue. Unfortunately most of this first episode slips right into the category of grim, bleak, action and lens flare filled 2020 sci-fi entertainement. It seems that after 2010 the only thing people want to talk about is how everything is. Which is totally fine IF you do it the right way. BUt in this episode there I saw none of the philosophical investigation that was a central part of almost every episode of the successful star trek. Action and violence can exist inside psychologically aswell and that is what I hoped this show would be about so hopefully they will fixe that through the rest of the season. I am equally dissapointed the this show has hopped on the boring trend of AI as all the millions of other (mostly) bad sci-fi of today. Obviously it has to have some impact as Data is an android (or as they called it a "synthetic lifeform") so I hope that they will explore the issue in a more philsophical, moral and most importantly in a more Star Trek way in the following episodes.

Also it is hard to belive that the destruction of Romulus could have had this big of an impact on the WHOLE Federation. I get that Picard is emotionally scarred and traumatized and that is what I hoped the show would be about. And not that the federation, which, last I checked, still was a paradise in 2370. I mean, thinking back to the Dominion war, where starfleet (subsidiary of the federation) lost around 10k+ people per week was still going "good" but obviously the characters were still traumatized as was the quadrant.

All in all the show HAS a lot that it can achieve but this first episode is lackluster in both the setting of the story, the characters (excluding Picard) but at least the theme score was not (that) bad.

Faithful to "Next Generation" whilst carving its own identity
DVD_Connoisseur24 January 2020
"Remembrance" is a memorable and stunning episode to start this ambitious new series.

Dark, unpredictable and moving, "Picard" is a true treasure. It is brilliant to see Patrick Stewart resume his role as Jean-Luc.

Absolutely gripping.

Good, but has room to improve
Odintodd25 January 2020
Don't try to force a situation in a series if the scenes don't call for it, ie; the initial meeting of Picard and 'Daughter'. The scene felt forced and took time from the plot/episode, this time could have been taken from somewhere else and allowed for flow during the scene.

The writing is the main problem
nodlimax24 January 2020
Picard is back....or is he? Is that actually the Picard we knew from TNG?

It appears that way when they make obvious references to the older movies and shows. But then again various aspects of past events are blatantly ignored which then brings me to the question => In which time line are we at the moment?

There is also various problems with the characters and dialogues. The conversations feel forced and VERY unnatural. They're jumping from A to D and then straight to M without giving any indication of how certain conclusions are made. The problem here is also that the pacing with them is very quick and doesn't really give you any opportunity to think about it. At the same time certain comments from characters are very cheesy and cringe worthy.

I will not give up on the show yet as I want to see where they are going with certain things and whether my suspicions will be confirmed - these being that the writers have no idea what they are doing or how to treat certain characters.

Btw. if the writers actually infantilize the "Romulan Star Empire" as it currently seems then this would seriously **** me off. Romulans in the past shows were always shown as a very strong faction that had to be treated carefully and taken serious. And they were supposed to be pretty smart guys going for schemes within schemes and so on. What has been shown in Star Trek Picard in the first episode seems to throw that away...

A great series opener... I hope the series maintains this quality
Tweekums24 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Eighteen years since the events portrayed in the film 'Star Trek: Nemesis' Jean-Luc Picard is living out his retirement on his vineyard in France. We later learn that he left Star Fleet in disgust after events lead to it abandoning the evacuation of Romulus and a ban being place on synthetic beings. Meanwhile in Boston a young woman, named Dahj, is at home talking to her boyfriend when assailants beam in... her boyfriend is killed and they try to kidnap her. They talk of her not being activated yet when suddenly she fights back and dispatches them... she has no idea how she did it and she has an urge to seek out Picard. After they meet, Picard discovers a connection between her and his old friend Data... soon the danger rapidly increases.

One can't really judge a series by its opening episode but if it continues to be as good as this I shall be very pleased. It may feature the same main character as 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' but tonally it is very different. TNG was full of hope but here the tone is darker; Picard states that Star Fleet is no longer the organisation he was in. There is some impressive action which is more violent than any I recall in the TNG days. The story was intriguing and it looks as though the plot could be ongoing; more like the Dominion War in 'Deep Space Nine' than the episodic TNG... to my mind this is a good thing. Patrick Stewart may be almost eighty but he still has what it takes... if anything his age adds further gravitas to the role. There is also a fine performance from Isa Briones as Dahj; an intriguing character. The special effects are impressive. Overall I'd say this was a great series opener... I'll definitely be watching next week.
