- Fourteen years after retiring from Starfleet, Jean-Luc Picard, still haunted by the death of Data, is living a quiet life on his family vineyard when a woman comes to him for help.
- At the end of the 24th Century, and 14 years after his retirement from Starfleet, Jean-Luc Picard is living a quiet life on his vineyard, Chateau Picard. When he is sought out by a mysterious young woman, Dahj, in need of his help, he soon realizes she may have personal connections to his own past.
- Picard enjoys a game of poker with Data on a star ship. Picard amuses himself that Data pretends to have a tell, but his real tell is that he doesn't have one. Picard admits he is lonely. Turns out Picard was dreaming, and he wakes up in his bed at home. His dog is named "Number One". His runs his own vineyard in France. Picard is looked after by Jaris (Orla Brady) and Zhaban (Jamie McShane), who are both Romulans.
In an interview, retired Starfleet Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) reveals that he resigned in protest after Starfleet abandoned plans to rescue Romulan citizens from a supernova when rogue synthetics attacked the rescue fleet. Romulans had asked for Federation help and Picard believed that it was their profound obligation to give it. Federation chose to support the rescue effort initially and Picard left the Enterprise to lead the rescue armada of 10,000 warp capable ferries to relocate 900 million Romulan citizens.
A group of rogue synthetics dropped the planetary defense shields around Mars and hacked Mars' own defense net, wiping out the rescue armada stationed there. The Utopia Planitia shipyard was destroyed, and the explosions ignited the flammable vapors in Martian stratosphere. Mars is on fire till this day. 92,143 lives were lost. Starfleet banned the creation of synthetics after the attack. It is still not clear why synthetics went rouge and did what they did. Data was a synthetic, but Picard never lost faith in him. Picard resigned as it was no longer Starfleet. The Galaxy was mourning and Starfleet slunk from its duties. It was criminal to abandon the Romulans to their fate.
Romulan assassins attack a young woman named Dahj (Isa Briones) and kill her partner. She was just selected as a fellow to the Daystrom institute on Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Consciousness. This triggers something in Dahj, and she is able to kill the assassins.
Experiencing visions of Picard and seeing his interview, Dahj seeks him out. Picard does not recognize Dahj. Dahj recounts the attack on her, but doesn't know who attacked her. Jaris treats Dahj's wounds. Dahj says that she feels safe with Picard. The next morning, Dahj leaves without informing Picard. After meeting her, Picard visits Starfleet Archives and finds a painting that features a figure who resembles Dahj. Entitled "Daughter", the painting was given to Picard by his android former lieutenant commander Data (Brent Spiner). It was one from a set of two similar paintings that Data created.
Dahj calls her mother (Sumalee Montano) who tells her to go back to Picard. Dahj quickly hacks into various programs to find Picard in real time. Picard tells Dahj how Data was his friend, and sacrificed his life for Picard over 2 decades ago. Picard tells Dahj that Data painted her as she is now, but more than 30 years ago. He named the painting "daughter". Picard says that Dahj is a synthetic and that the attack on her, "activated" her.
More Romulan assassins attack Picard and Dahj, and Dahj is killed. Laris brings Picard back home. She says that Picard was alone when he was found, and the security feed also didn't have anyone with Picard. Picard meets with Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) at the Daystrom Institute, who explains that Dahj could be Data's daughter due to an experimental procedure known as fractal Neuronic cloning, which results in twin androids with organic bodies. After Data's death, Bruce Maddox (John Ales) continued the work on creating a sentient Synthetic. But due to the Mars incident, the Synthetic were banned and Maddox could never complete his work. It is still not possible to create a sentient synthetic without a copy of Data's Positronic neural net. Fractal Neuronic cloning was Maddox's idea. A copy of the entire neural net could be possible with a single Neuron. Maddox somehow achieved fractal Neuronic cloning and fashion the organic bodies using Data's old painting.
Meanwhile, Dahj's twin, Soji Asha (Isa Briones), is working in a Borg Cube that has been reclaimed by Romulan refugees. Soji meets Narek (Harry Treadaway), who says he had a brother whom he lost a year earlier.
