Apple is getting a head start at the Emmys ahead of the launch of the scripted and documentary series slate of the new worldwide video programming division under Jamie Erlicht & Zack Van Amburg. The tech giant landed its first ever Primetime Emmy award today for Apple Music’s Carpool Karaoke, which was named Outstanding Short Form Variety Series at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
It was Apple’s first Emmy for original content, joining several technical/engineering Emmy Awards the Silicon Valley company has won over the years, first in 2011 for developing FireWire and most recently in 2017 for Siri’s integration into Apple TV.
In a competitive situation, Apple Music landed Carpool Karaoke, an offshoot from the viral segment on CBS’ The Late Late Show With James Corden, in 2016. It was one of the platform’s first original series efforts, along with another reality series, Planet of the Apps.

As the streaming wars continue to unfold—with Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu preparing to stake their respective claims at the Emmys Sept. 17—the great unknown remains what role Apple will play in an increasingly pitched competition. The world’s first trillion-dollar company has made plenty of waves with their announced programming, thanks to deals with high-profile creators like Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, and M. Night Shyamalan. But a few titles, loglines, and well-known names are all that’s so far known about the TV plans of a company that generally operates in secrecy whether revealing a new iPhone model or a new entertainment platform.
Here are a few of the biggest questions about the tech giant’s foray into streaming—ones that executives across the business may well be asking as they wait to see just how a new, deep-pocketed player disrupts an already-unstable industry.

Apple is adding some star-studded pizzazz to its first original series, Planet Of The Apps -- a promotional vehicle of sorts that’s being billed as a reality competition show to find the next great mobile app. Goop mastermind Gwyneth Paltrow, famed entrepreneur and investor Gary Vaynerchuk, and the musician/tech-head will.i.am have joined the series as mentors and advisors. Paltrow and will.i.am will also serve as executive producers on the series.
Media veterans Ben Silverman and Howard Owens are developing Planet Of The Apps through their nascent production venture, Propagate. An open casting call is currently underway through Aug. 26. Aspiring app makers will have the opportunity to win a featured spot in Apple’s App Store and up to $10 million in venture capital funding.
