Short-format Drama
Ghy Culture & Media, a mainland China-focused entertainment company from Singapore, has launched a slate of short drama series that it says mirror the professionally-generated short format developed by Chinese platforms Douyin and Bilibili. Its first three are fantasy “Goddess Hotel,” urban fantasy-light comedy “Miss Tanya” and sci-fi comedy “Ability Bureau.” Each short drama series is slated to run for 2 or 3 seasons, with 12 to 16 episodes per season, and each episode delivered at approximately 3 minutes. Involving Singapore production teams and actors, each project is estimated to cost between S350,000 to S1.6 million to produce. Ghy describes the slate as Singapore-China collaborations, but it does not disclose if there is a Chinese co-producer. Instead, it reveals that they will be simultaneously released on Douyin and TikTok, Douyin’s global English counterpart, with versions in English, Bahasa Indonesian and Thai. Ghy says that it aims to establish a cultural bridge between Singapore,...

Imagine that when you were a child your mother murdered your sister and tried to kill you as well. Cut to decades later, when the house in which these horrors took place is about to be torn down. Naturally, the first thing you’ll want to do is take one last look around the place for old time’s sake.
Sounds implausible, right? But not in the world of horror films in which characters make so many boneheaded, life-threatening decisions that yelling at the screen has become a cherished communal experience among moviegoers. The latest example, Austin Reading’s Darkness Rising, would be...

Happy beginning of June, everyone! Now that summer is just about in full swing, we have a look at the horror and sci-fi VOD releases coming our way this month, in case you prefer to beat the heat from the comfort of your own couch while catching up on movies.

Some childhood homes hold good memories. This isn't one of them. For Madison, visiting the house where she grew up—and was nearly killed—is not a pleasant experience, and although she escaped death within its walls once before, the past isn't done with her yet, as evidenced by the spooky new trailer for Darkness Rising, a new IFC Midnight horror film with a cast that includes Ted Raimi.
Directed by Austin Reading from a screenplay by Vikram Weet, Darkness Rising stars Tara Holt, Katrina Law, Bryce Johnson, Heather Mazur, and Ted Raimi. IFC Midnight will release Darkness Rising in theaters and on VOD beginning June 30th.
