Jess is now 16 years old and can be a handful for her mother as she enters a rebellious stage. She certainly is not keen on that pink mac that her mother has purchased for her.

Jess is still into the Pentecostal church and going around preaching.

Although Pastor Finch has introduced Jess to a young lad. Jess's head is turned when she meets Melanie in the fish market.

Jess introduces Melanie to her church and soon they are in love. Their affection being so obvious to Jess's mother as well as Miss Jewsbury.

It was surprisingly just how fast moving this adaptation is. The teenage Jess's affection with Melanie develops quickly.

The public humiliation of the pair by Pastor Finch was dreadful. The attempt to purge Jess of her sins was shocking.

It is still a terrific adaptation by Jeanette Winterson of her own story. It is so well acted by the late and lamented Charlotte Coleman and Emily Aston.
