Apologies to André Bazin, Pauline Kael, and Andrew Sarris, but Roger Ebert was unquestionably the most influential film critic of the cinema's first century. In fact, unless the media landscape is drastically altered over the next few years, he may also wind up being the last film critic who ever truly mattered.
I do not mean this as a put-down of my colleagues. If you actually read film criticism nowadays, you know that there's never been a more thrillingly diverse assortment of voices in this too-cluttered arena. Manohla Dargis, Justin Chang, Scott Tobias, Angelica Jade Bastién, and Bilge Ebiri are must-reads in this house, and I could name a few dozen more who are reliably incisive and original in their thinking. I don't have time to read all of the critics I respect, which is both a frustrating and good thing.
But be honest, do you actually read film criticism nowadays?...

With the 2023 Cannes Film Festival less than two weeks away, we’re delighted to exclusively announce the second edition of the “Unifrance Critics Lab,” an initiative designed to strengthen the ties between English-speaking film critics and French artists and the film industry. The program’s successful inaugural edition in 2022 gave the film industry and Cannes access to outstanding, up-and-coming freelance writers, all of whom were nominated by leading film critics.
The program provides a valuable opportunity for both established and up-and-coming US and UK film journalists to discover the new generation of emerging French talent and their exciting works, while better connecting with key French auteurs and industry players to broaden their professional opportunities. The cost of attending Cannes is often one of the highest-cited barriers to entry for many critics without a full-time position, and this often leaves out crucial, diverse voices from the conversation.

“He had been up all night and he came upstairs. It was like 7:00 in the morning and he grabbed my hand and said ‘follow me’, and so I followed him downstairs,...

Having worked as a speechwriter at Washington, D.C., Alston Ramsay has unique insights into the world of politics under both the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, making him the perfect person to write The Current Occupant, which follows a psychiatric ward patient who believes he's the President of the United States. The latest entry in Blumhouse and Hulu's Into the Dark series, and directed by Alston's brother Julius, The Current Occupant is now streaming on Hulu, and we caught up with Alston in our latest Q&a feature to discuss how his real world experience in politics (including a year spent in Afghanistan) shaped him as a writer, teaming up with his brothers to make movies, and the films and TV series that influenced the institutionalized horror of The Current Occupant.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on Into the Dark: The Current Occupant!

With Netflix currently going through a rare drought in terms of adding new content, competitors like Hulu and Disney Plus are continuing to put out fresh material to keep us busy. The former, in particular, are adding some great movies and series for July 13th to 19th, including The Weekend, Into the Dark and documentary Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love, on top of recently released critical favorites like Palm Springs.
From today, Hulu users can catch up on My Scientology Movie, the Louis Theroux-produced look at the controversial organization, as well as the Canadian drama The Rest of Us, Aisling Chin-Yee’s well-regarded directorial debut from 2019. On Wednesday the 15th, meanwhile, we’re getting The Weekend, wherein a comedian finds herself caught between her ex, his new girlfriend and another guest, leading to some predictably complicated farce.

Comparisons between Led Zeppelin and Semisonic — the alt-pop band best known for the rousing 1998 hit “Closing Time” — are few and far between. But former Semisonic singer, guitarist and songwriter Dan Wilson thinks there’s at least one: It’s not easy to just dash off a good Semisonic song — or a good Zep track. You have to be in the right headspace.
“[I would try to write a Semisonic song and it] would either not be great, or be good but not sound like the band,” Wilson says. “I just didn’t have a handle on how to sound like...

“Live From Here With Chris Thile,” the weekly radio show that began as a continuation of “A Prairie Home Companion” before taking on its own name and identity, has been canceled, American Public Media Group announced Tuesday.
The St. Paul-based company blamed the economic effects of the Covid-19 for that and other cuts that resulted in 28 employees being let go.
Thile, the dexterously multitalented member of the Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek who took over “Prairie Home Companion” from Garrison Keillor in 2016, tweeted about the end of his four-year run as host.
“Not one live broadcast has gone by where I didn’t thank my absurdly lucky stars for your wide open ears and hearts,” Thile wrote. “Over the weekend, I was informed that American Public Media will no longer be producing the show. While this news fills me with sadness, I understand the decision, as my extraordinary teammates and...

Low Cut Connie’s Adam Weiner came up playing in dive bars — Saturday night hangout spots full of neighborhood folks “getting down on funky records and good vibes,” he tells Rolling Stone. And that’s the feeling he’s aiming to emulate with his new syndicated radio show, The Connie Club. The show launches on October 5th, airing across the country on stations like Wxpn and the Current.
“I grew up listening to these crazy freewheeling FM radio shows in Philly and New Jersey,” Weiner says. “I love those shows...
