Beware the soup.

Colonel Gerard throws a party for his nephew Edward, who's returned home having been a prisoner of war in Korea. It's not a happy environment as the family dynamic is very unsettled, it's no wonder a murder follows.

A solid mystery, a pretty decent plot, which makes me recall an episode of Tales of the Unexpected, Fat Chance, where the modus operandi is also used.

Some definite humour throughout, with Mr Digby causing a few laughs. Emma Fielding very good as always. Some lovely costumes used throughout.

A solid mystery 7/10

Another interesting episode, definitely not one of my absolute favourite but it was still good. I recognised Katie Leung immediately from Harry Potter though no doubt she wouldn't be pleased to be associated solely with any one film or franchise, but I'm sure Mr Williams feels the same!

The colonel

Warning: Spoilers
Here Colonel Gerard is one rich immoral guy, who has a Chinese adopted daughter (played by Katie Leung of Harry Potter and Annika fame). Anyway, Colonel Gerard appears to have bumped off Edward's father so he could marry Edward's mom who is played by Emma Fielding.

Anyway, that reminded me of King Herod who married his sister-in-law. Anyway, this episode is full of intrigue and the ending is quite redemptive really and Father Brown eventually manages to solve the crime and allow the perpetrator to escape with a new passport.

I'm enjoying catching up on the early seasons of Father Brown for daytime TV.

The Prize of Colonel Gerard

Colonel Cecil Gerard was an unlikable man. His stepson and nephew Edward disliked him for marrying his mother. Edward thinks he offed his father in order to do so.

Edward also had a traumatic experience in the Korean war where he was held captive. Gerard also has a Chinese adopted daughter but everybody in the household seems to have some motive for his murder.

When Edward is arrested, Father Brown investigates and believes tiger whiskers holds a clue.

A rather racy undercurrent to this episode, Gerard's brother has a thing with the busty maid, the bad tempered French chef is known to be a tiger in bed and even a smidgen of incest.

Of course once Father Brown works out the method of the murder, it is easy to guess the suspect.

Opening music

Could anyone tell me the name of the music played during the opening party scene ? There is no mention in the credits. Sounds like a waltz.

I really appreciate Diectors like Woody Allen who acknowledge all the music they use in their shows even if copywriters have expired and. They don't have to do it

I've tried the Shazam app to find the name of this music but no luck

I don 't get the ten line minimum requirement

I really enjoy Father Brown mysteries.

The opening credits remind me of the Mad Men opening mixed with the Perot opening graphics

Tacky not good people with morals

This is the story of a man who is rich and mean.

He is murdered in his bed. He does not get along with his step son and others. Him and his wife also have a oriental adopted daughter.

Later when Father Brown goes to question one of the men he is in the closet with a maid feeling her breast. I found this very offensive that they would put a scene like this in a religious series. The man that was murdered also made sexual advances toward his adopted daughter.

Anyway religion is not good in these series. Lady Felicia is always sleeping with someone, and made comments to Father Brown.

Father Brown makes the Sign of the Cross is sloppy manner and when asked to pray he prays in Latin which no one understand and is rarely used.

So I did not like this episode at all.
