Colonel Cecil Gerard host a festive welcome back from Korean POW camp of his orphan nephew and step-son Edward, who publicly sides with his Communist captors and confides into Brown he suspects his bully guardian of murdering his father, to marry widow Ada. Edward is arrested after Gerard dies from exotic poisoning, with the whiskers of his own trophy tiger, having openly threatened during another bitter row. Brown digs deeper, notably looking into Cecil's parasitic brother in law Rupert Digby and the colonel's adopted Chinese daughter Jia-Li, when a second murder attempt fails to kill him, not by chance.
