Is it fair that some of television's most emotionally wrenching and nightmare-inducing moments came from supposedly light entertainment?
When we tune into a sitcom, cartoon, or low-conflict drama, are we expecting to be hit over the head with unspeakable tragedy and menace?
It's almost like biting into a Klondike bar and tasting spicy tobasco sauce instead.
Still, if you can memorably crush the audience's heart while still keeping with the show's spirit and tone, you can create television history.
Going through the list of sobs and shudders, I had to eliminate some classic TV moments because they were either "Goodbye Episodes" (and Goodbyes are just sad in general) or because they were on a show that wasn't exactly safe to begin with.
(Sorry, Roseanne, All in the Family, Scrubs, and M*A*S*H -- you were never light!)
Otherwise, here are ten of the heaviest moments from light entertainment,...

John Krasinski’s “If” presents a menagerie of celebrity-voiced imaginary friends who are in search of existential purpose after their kids grow up and forget them. Enter Ryan Reynolds, who runs a matchmaking service for the “IFs,” who live in a secluded retirement home at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park in Coney Island.
Framestore handled the audacious fusion of live-action and CG animation and VFX (800 shots) spread across their London, Montreal, and Mumbai studios. Led by animation director Arslan Elver and VFX supervisor Chris Lawrence, the team worked closely with director-actor Krasinski to get believable performances out of the IFs on set or in post. Krasinski saw them as visceral, hyper-real puppets. The techniques included stand-ins to help the voice actors deliver full performances, placing the animated characters in the shot with VR, or the use of home-shot reference footage from the animators.

Back in November, Mark Hamill told fans at Fan Expo San Francisco that he would no longer be portraying the Clown Prince of Gotham.
Despite being considered by many to be the best Joker of all time, Hamill believed he just couldn't play the role unless it was opposite Kevin Conroy's Batman. Conroy, who voiced Bruce Wayne/Batman across several projects, passed away in November 2022.
But it seems there was a little caveat that allowed for Hamill to reprise the iconic villain role one final time in an upcoming game called MultiVersus. As it turns out, prior to his passing, Kevin Conroy also voiced Batman in the fighting game. It's perhaps for this reason that Hamill made an exception to his previous statement and returned to the role of Joker in the game.
For those unfamiliar, MultiVersus is a free-to-play platform fighter, in the same vein as Nintendo's Super Smash Bros.

Itchy and Scratchy are responsible for some of the most memorable episodes of "The Simpsons." Every fan will fondly remember "The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show" or Marge's crusade against the ultra-violent kids' cartoon in "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge." Indeed, "The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show" landed at number five on /Film's ranking of the best episodes of "The Simpsons," with "Itchy and Scratchy Land" coming in at number 15.
Clearly, then, "Itchy and Scratchy" was more than a parody of "Tom & Jerry"-style cartoons. Though the central joke was as simple as "What if Tom & Jerry was super violent," the show-within-a-show was often used as a way to extend the cultural satire that was so integral to "The Simpsons." Plus, as legendary writer John Schwartzwelder once told The New Yorker, it allowed the writers a break from the rules of the show overall:

Hollywood star Bradley Cooper is spending Thanksgiving with Leonard Bernstein’s children.
The 48-year-old actor, who portrays the legendary conductor in upcoming biopic ‘Maestro’, is jetting to Connecticut to spend the holiday with Nina, Jamie and Alexander Bernstein after they bonded when he made the film.
Speaking on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’, Cooper said: “We are going to go to (New) Jersey and then we’re going to go to Fairfield to spend it with the Bernsteins – the children. And we shot (‘Maestro’) in that house.”
Cooper spent six years preparing for the role, spending time with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and studying Bernstein’s work, but he insisted it was never a hardship for him or co-star Carey Mulligan, who plays his on-screen wife Felicia.
He said: “It didn’t feel like acting, it felt like we were just channeling these people, so it was so thrilling.

Bradley Cooper is growing into a serious artist with his directorial efforts receiving accolades. His inspirations, however, may be surprisingly less prestigious. Cooper’s sophomore directing and starring project comes in the form of Netflix’s new film, Maestro, in which he plays famous conductor Leonard Bernstein. In addition to directing, Cooper co-wrote the script with Josh Singer. Singer spoke of the film via Netflix’s Tudum, “I think people will see the complexity of marriage and the many forms love can take. I think those are both powerful themes.”
Cooper’s fascination with Leonard Bernstein is far from complex. The actor has revealed that his interest in the maestro can be traced back to cartoons featuring the star characters performing as conductors. Cooper and his co-star, Carey Mulligan, spoke with CBS Mornings about their new project. Cooper revealed, “It started with Tom and Jerry and Bugs Bunny as a kid,...
