During its first quarter earnings call earlier this month, Disney announced that the next animated film it will bring to theaters on Thanksgiving will be the sequel to its 2016 hit “Moana,” signaling a renewed push on sequels after years of original animated titles.
But “Moana 2” was originally announced in 2020, under short-lived CEO Bob Chapek, as a streaming series exclusive to Disney+. This change underscores a shifting strategy by Disney and other studios to move films previously planned for streaming to the big screen — in part to calm jittery investors nervous about the thin pipeline of tentpole movies after the Hollywood strikes.
The “Moana 2” re-direct follows Paramount’s “Mean Girls” and “Smile,” and Warner Bros./New Line’s “Evil Dead Rise,” all theatrical releases that were originally intended to be streaming-only.

As streaming prices continue to rise, and more and more streaming services drop titles from their libraries, it’s worth considering whether it makes more sense to simply buy a digital version of your favorite movie or TV show so that you never have to worry about whether or not you will be able to watch it again. If that sounds like a good idea to you, Prime Video has dropped an early Black Friday deal that might be right up your alley. Head to the Prime Video store and you’ll find steep discounts on some of the most popular movies and TV shows up to 50% off the normal price! The one catch is that — as of publication time — you must be a Prime Video member to receive these discounts. However, they are expected to be extended to non-members as well before Black Friday, but The Streamable was unable...

Annie Murphy's career on screen began in the mid-2000s, and since her breakout role in the beloved sitcom "Schitt's Creek," she has had a number of notable roles in film and TV. The actor made her TV debut in the 2007 television film "Lethal Obsession" and went on to have supporting roles in both Canadian and American works, including "Blue Mountain State" and "Rookie Blue."
By the early 2010s, her acting career began to plateau, and Murphy's work was inconsistent. It wasn't until 2013, when she auditioned for the role of Alexis Rose in "Schitt's Creek," that her career really took off. In a 2020 interview on "The Kelly Clarkson Show," Murphy explained, "Just before 'Schitt's Creek,' things were quite bleak. My house had just burnt down. I had like $3 in my bank account. I hadn't worked in close to two years. And I had just blown my...

The animated highlights of 2023 thus far: Illumination/Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.36 billion globally, $574.9 million domestically) and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($689 million globally, $381 million domestically) were massive box office hits, proving that there is a hungry audience clamoring to see animation in theaters again.
However, Pixar/Disney’s “Elemental” and DreamWorks/Universal’s “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” were major box office flops: Pixar’s immigrant story about the elements trying to co-exist only mustered $154.4 million domestically (placing 20th on the studio’s list of features). However, it grabbed $490 million worldwide and subsequently became Disney+’s most-viewed movie premiere of the year. Meanwhile, DreamWorks’ coming-of-age Kraken comedy had the worst domestic showing in the studio’s history (with $15.7 million). This signaled that original animated content still has theatrical hurdles to overcome compared to franchises.

Unlike their just opened “Haunted Mansion”, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” might ultimately break even. If it does, its performance on PVOD could be make or break.
Of note, suggesting Disney’s much-revised strategy, this release came after nine weekends in theaters (60 days) and ahead of future Disney+ streaming.
With a reported production cost of $250 million and the usual added expense, its ultimate worldwide gross of $600 million, though otherwise impressive, means post-theatrical revenues need to be substantial. Opening #1 on all charts its initial week is a good first step.
What it will need is multiple weeks of strong play beyond a default first week #1. Last week “The Flash” (Warner Bros.), a far smaller performer in theaters, did debut at the top. But this week it’s only #2 on one chart (Vudu), while third and fourth elsewhere. The bounty for PVOD comes from long term, and high end charts (with the...

DreamWorks Animation’s “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” (in theater’s now) is a different kind of undersea adventure.
The title character is a seemingly regular teenage girl living in the town of Oceanside (voiced by Lana Condor) who knows that her family is keeping something from her but doesn’t understand that she is actually the latest descendant in an underwater kraken kingdom. Thankfully, she reconnects with her grandmother (Jane Fonda) and together they unlock her kraken powers. Or maybe the right phrase is release the kraken.
And she’ll need it, as she’s got to do battle with a cute, popular girl who is also an evil mermaid. This leads to an unexpectedly epic kaiju battle between mermaid and kraken that is pretty amazing.
TheWrap spoke to director Kirk DeMicco, who helmed “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” (with co-director Faryn Pearl), shortly before the movie’s splashy (get it?...

The release marked the fifth biggest opening weekend for a film in 2023 in the territory, including previews, with a market share of 43%.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney), with a reported production budget close to $300 million, opened to $130 million worldwide. That includes the studio’s generous estimate of $60 million for the U.S./Canada.
This weekend marks the midway point of the summer movie season, which began with expectations that it might achieve a 20 percent uptick against 2022. As of now, the season’s total gross sits slightly below last year.
Add in marketing, including its Cannes Film Festival premiere, and the total investment for “Indiana” might total $450 million with no path to profit. It might lose as much as “The Flash” (Warner Bros. Discovery), which cost closer to $200 million and will see a worldwide gross around $250 million.
Unless there’s a massive turnaround for “Indiana”, it will get to between $300 million and $350 million worldwide. With somewhat more than half returned to Disney in film rental, that’s under $200 million versus its huge cost.

Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) and Grandmamah (Jane Fonda) in DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken’
For decades, movies have been telling stories of various sea creatures residing in the oceans, ranging from man-eating sharks to friendly whales, beautiful mermaids, and even a fish searching for his lost son. However, the latest animated coming-of-age comedy by DreamWorks, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, tells the story of perhaps the most misunderstood sea creature of them all – the Kraken.
The film opens in the little town of Oceanside, where 15-year-old Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor) does her best to fit in at school by posing as a human, even though she’s a sea creature. She has a group of friends and is working up the courage to ask her crush, skater-boy Connor (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White), to the prom. The problem is that her mom, Agatha (voiced by Toni Collette), won...

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is gearing up for its last adventure with $7.2 million in previews at the domestic box office.
Disney and Lucasfilm’s fifth and final “Indiana Jones” film is expected to whip up $65 million in its opening weekend, a solid start except for the fact the movie carries a massive $295 million budget. A portion of the budget went to de-aging special effects, which turned 80-year-old star Harrison Ford back into his younger self for the movie, which partly takes place during Indy’s early years. The $295 million budget does not include marketing costs to promote the film, such as an exorbitant Cannes Film Festival premiere and afterparty. Indiana Jones has overcome some eye-popping odds in his adventures, and “Dial of Destiny” turning a profit may be his greatest challenge yet.
