The fact that the new Fox series “The Orville” is an hour-long “space adventure,” not a half-hour sitcom, has proven to be a major surprise for fans of creator Seth MacFarlane.
It makes sense, given that he’s best known for the hundreds of episodes of animated comedy he’s produced since the launch of “Family Guy” in 1999. In addition, there’s much of the show’s marketing: Looking back at the original trailer presented during the Fox upfronts, from the music choices and the punchline-heavy editing to the tagline “the universe has a crew loose,” it’s easy to see why people still seem to think the series is a half-hour comedy.
Of course, as viewers now know, “The Orville” is twice the length and nowhere near as funny as expected. Instead, the freshman drama aims to create a new spin on classic science fiction series like “Star Trek” — and not that successfully.

Press Release -- "Separation can be a terrible thing. It can break you down physically, mentally, and emotionally. The person you once were can begin to slip away. How much agony will it take before you lose yourself? Would you realize just how far gone you are? Wisconsin’s very own Head Trauma Productions, in association with The Line Film Co., is thrilled to release its latest short film, Pity. Written and directed by...

Two things can/have happened with the greater ease of making an indepedent film: One is that newbie filmmakers take no time or care with writing a good story and then take even less time to plan how they will film the story because, you know, they can just shoot a bunch of digital and worry about the results later. Two is that filmmakers do take that time to make sure the story is told well, thinking through how each shot is presented and how it represents the story. Luckily, Dead Weight falls into the latter category. A character-driven horror drama, its emphasis on ordinary, non-heroic people and their actions (both good and bad), this is a solid feature debut from directors/writers Adam Bartlett and John...

The Milwaukee Film Festival launched Cinema Hooligante this year to showcase all that is “gory, trippy, raunchy, scary, sometimes offensive, always fun.” The program got off to a great start with the excellent anthology V/H/S and continued with a screening of Dead Weight, a no-budget, post-apocalyptic tale shot entirely in Wisconsin that has been making the festival rounds (HorrorHound Weekend earlier this month, Freak Show Horror Film Fest in late October).
The set up will be familiar to genre fans. Charlie (Joe Belknap) returns home to his apartment in Toledo and partakes in his favorite method of relaxation: pajamas, cereal, and comic books. Suddenly he gets a frantic phone call from his girlfriend Samantha (Mary Lindberg), who is working in Minneapolis. Has he seen the news? The world is in chaos. Major cities throughout the Midwest are crumbling. Highways are off limits.
