Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer (below) for “The Day Iceland Stood Still,” ahead of the film’s world premiere at Hot Docs on April 29.
When Oct. 24, 1975 was declared as “Women’s Day Off” in Iceland, some 90% of the island’s women refused to work, cook or take care of the children. The country was brought to a standstill.
“The Day Iceland Stood Still,” directed by Emmy award-winning U.S. filmmaker Pamela Hogan in collaboration with Icelandic producer Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir, looks back at the event and speaks to Icelandic women about its significance. “We loved our male chauvinist pigs,” recalls one of the activists. “We just wanted to change them a little!”
The film features a rare interview with Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the world’s first democratically-elected female head of state, who took office just five years after the strike, and current president Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, who tells...

Netflix has emerged victorious in a bidding war for “The Fifth Wheel,” a comedy starring Kim Kardashian.
Several major players, including theatrical distributors and streamers, were competing for the film, according to Deadline, which first reported news of the sale. But two of the five companies backed out at the last minute before Kardashian and co-writers Paula Pell and Janine Brito signed with Netflix on the dotted line.
Pell, a “Saturday Night Live” alum, is producing “The Fifth Wheel” with Kardashian. The logline is under wraps, but Kardashian is playing the eponymous “fifth wheel” alongside a female ensemble cast. Her co-stars have not been announced.
Kardashian, the savvy businesswoman behind the loungewear company Skims and star of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” has been cutting her teeth in the world of scripted entertainment. She starred in the most recent season of “American Horror Story” alongside Emma Roberts. Kardashian will be...

Not long after the Miami episode of Netflix’s hit show “’Street Food: USA” dropped, its Emmy-nominated director Mariano Carranza received an Instagram message. It was from Gastón Acurio, Peru’s preeminent chef-restaurateur of Astrid & Gastón fame, but Carranza thought it was a prank. It turned out to be the man himself. His request: “Could Carranza tell the story of his culinary school Pachacútec?” Thus began a collaboration that resulted in a moving documentary, “Pachacútec, the Improbable School,” that traces three former alumni and their journeys.
Its trailer, unveiled exclusively in Variety, opens with a group of select students walking up a sandy path to what celebrated Catalan Chef Joan Roca of three-Michelin-Star El Celler de Can Roca describes as “an oasis of culinary knowledge in the middle of a desert.”
And the school is literally in the middle of a desert, on the outskirts of Lima. Founded by Acurio...

Exclusive: Manny Coto died on July 9th at the age of 62. Nearly 35 years to the day earlier, he and I are on Beverly Boulevard picketing in front of CBS.
I’ve been a WGA member for about four months and Manny for maybe eight. To say we are wet behind the ears is an insult to moisture. As always, we are having a blast because everything we do together is fun. It’s how we have survived trying to break into show business. It’s amazing how doing something alongside your best friend never really feels daunting. Anyhow, we are in one of those long loops that keeps doubling back on itself once you reach the end of the line. And Manny suddenly says, “Holy shit, that’s Harlan Ellison we just passed!” I only know the name, but, along with Gene Roddenberry, Ellison is a particular hero of Manny...
