The Thirteen DVDs
claudio_carvalho10 July 2014
Dexter sends Sonya and Harrison to Orlando to protect his son From Jordan. Liddy chases Dexter and Lumen. Dexter discovers that the blood in Jordan's vial belongs to a woman named Emily Birch. Cole becomes prime suspect again but he is missing. The police investigation finds thirteen DVDs in Cole's house showing the torture of the girls. Meanwhile Lumen and Dexter visit Emily Birch but she refuses to talk with them. Soon Lumen returns to her house and learns that Emily was the first victim of Jordan Chase and his friends. Further, the real name of Jordan is Eugene Greer and the fifth teenager in the photo is Alex Tilden. Dexter and Lumen plot to kill him and prepare a kill room. Later Emily receives an unexpected friend.

"In the Beginning" is another great sequel of this excellent season. Angela "May" Bettis joins this series in the role of the mysterious woman that has survived the rapists. Debra will certainly be affected by the content of the DVDs. But the greatest surprise is the reunion of Emily and her visitor. My vote is nine.

A revelation

Warning: Spoilers
Lumen and Dexter decide to go see Emily Burch. They are anxious to find out how she ties in with the story and her blood in Jordan's pendant. What they do not expect is an uncooperative woman who shuts her door in their faces. Lumen fares better when she goes back alone to ask Emily questions that are unsolved yet. By pleading her case to Emily, Lumen is told the story about years back she was a camp counselor where she meet the five guys in the photo they found at Cole's home. The missing name is Alex Tilden, who is now a bank officer.

After LaGuerta decides to reopen the case about the killed women in the barrels, the detectives go to check Cole Harmon's apartment. Tey get lucky in finding a lot of material that incriminate him. The most important things they recover are CDs that show thirteen victims in different stages of being tortured. Dexter realizes the thirteenth disc will show Lumen's abuse. He decides to damage the CD so no one will be able to tie her to the crimes.

Jordan Chase decide to come to the station accompanied by his high paid lawyer and an entourage of bodyguards. He has come to give a DNA sample, something his lawyer is against. Jordan figures nothing will tie him to the murders, so he has Dexter take a swab of his saliva. Liddy is seen coming to Quinn's office when he is not there to falsify his signature so he can ask for surveillance equipment so he can keep spying on Lumen and Dexter.

After a visit from Dexter to Alex Tilden's bank, this man begins to get scared. Calling Jordan, he is put at ease. Later that night, Lumen and Dexter, now prepared to kill Alex, break in his house. There is even a room that will be suited to take him away. As he enters the house, he is overpowered.

Deb and Quinn decide to go to Tilden's house to talk to him and see how he fits into the picture. Naturally, there is a possibility they will run into Dexter and Lumen, but the duo has already left and have taken Alex Tilden to another location where Lumen will do the deed. After they finish with him, Lumen and Dexter exchange glances that indicate they are ready to go ahead with what they feel about one another since she came into his life.

Another good episode in the series, this one directed by Keith Gordon. The screenplay is credited to Scott Reynolds. Both men have a connection to the program, as they clearly show with this fast moving installment. Great interaction between Julia Stiles and Michael C. Hall. One wonders if she will stay for the next season. Peter Weller is perfectly creepy as Liddy. The cast does their excellent job to make this one of the best programs in television.

Depth of evil

Warning: Spoilers
1. Homicide chases the rape gang 2. Liddy is closing in 3. Lumen and Dexter get romantic

Solid episode. The fun about Dexter is when the police are chasing down the same people Dexter is chasing down. Now everyone except Jordan is dead - they are inevitably at the cross paths except the police would have nothing on Jordan.

The romantic turnaround with Lumen and Dexter was predictable but it was beautifully portrayed. Dexter is a creature of loneliness and in every season he craves for a deep human connection who understands him. He found it Lumen in this season.

Warning: Spoilers
I would say that Lumen *is* Dexter's girlfriend now! P. S. Dexter did *not* destroy the DVD of Luna's attack. He scratched up another (maybe blank) DVD and labeled it '13'. He gave the real disk to Luna to do with it whatever she wants.

S5.E10 - Brutality [9.3/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S5. E10) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 5 Episode 10 ''In The Beginning'': Episode 9 was great and I gave it a rating of 9/10. So they have all 13 discs, all of them are torture films, disturbing. They found the first girl that they tortured, but how did she survive? The guy that Quinn hired just wont let go, he is really bad news. Lumen is becoming Dexterish, I like it. Wow, the guy that Quinn hired has cameras and microphones inside Dex's house, this is extremely bad news. The first girl has some kind of relationship with Chase, prime example of stockholm syndrome? And the episode ends with Dex and Lumen kissing, nice! Does Dex finally have a true partner in crime? Overall an amazing episode, my rating is 9.3/10.

Missing Rita
kettbj27 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I miss Rita. I know I'm late to the party. I'm a romantic. I'm sure this Lumen lady will die, too, but Rita just died. Also, Lumen has been through sexual trama, is she really wanting sex? Just yuck. I've watched all the episodes so far including this one, and I miss Rita is all I have to say. So the rest of this will just be random thoughts. Sure I guess we all need a human connection, but this just seems wrong. But like I'm predicting, Lumen will die just like the majority of these friends of Dexter. Honestly, I actually wanted to quit watching this show, but my ADHA wouldn't let me. Until later.
