The Girls in the Choir
Hitchcoc3 December 2015
A tyrannical choir director leads a group of girls. Their ages are hard to figure. They appear to be senior high girls. They are often snotty and mean. They perform at a very high level. One young woman, Miranda, has superior ability but is a holy terror. She is disrespectful and has an ugly temperament. One night she disappears and leaves behind things she would never think of leaving. Wallander is on the case. There is another girl who seems to have a crush on her. There is also a history of manipulation of men. Soon this other girl is missing. It is hard to figure out the case because the girls are closed mouthed and jealous of each other. Once again, there is some extremely careless police work at the conclusion which diminished the result a bit.

The choir
jotix1001 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
An all girls choir is seen in concert. Miranda, a beautiful girl appears to be the soloist. After the performance, the director of the group, Bodil Jensen is critical of her star singer's rendition. Miranda, in an act of defiance, challenges her opinion. Miranda and Lina Martenson share a room as well as an easy friendship. Miranda receives a call on her cell phone. She goes out to talk and she never returns.

The report of the missing girl, is taken seriously by Wallander and his team. Miranda is of Middle East extraction, although born in Sweden. Her parents are quite upset, which is only natural. In her calling history the police finds a number that has called Miranda repeatedly. The number is traced to a young man Johan Rasmusson, who was interested in the missing girl. Interviewing Johan, Wallander talks about his 'skin head'past, which has been revealed by Lena, but it is obvious the youth had nothing to do with the disappearance.

The choir next engagement is coming up. Bodil taps Lena to take Mirnada's place. Lena is not pleased by her selection, as it is clear she wants to stay away from the director. A mysterious man also attends the concert. Isabelle is told about the green car that has been seen outside the school by a neighbor. That brings them to Thomas Hammar, who casts an air of suspicion in the eyes of the police.

When Lina disappears after the performance, the police are notified, but they are clueless because the lack of evidence. By this time, the police find the body of Miranda in a forest near the school. Isabelle, takes an interest in solving the case because Lina, like her was abandoned by her father. Her obstinacy leads to an amazing realization, and Kurt Wallander knows where to look to apprehend the culprit of the two young women disappearances.

The episode was directed by Agneta Fagerstrom-Olsson and written by Pernilla Oljeslund. This chapter shows the evil machinations of an deceiving adult that has the power and authority to do harm to innocent youngsters. There are a charged sexual undertone in this installment of the series created from the novels and stories of Henning Mankell. This episode showcases Nina Zanjani who appears as Isabelle, the police apprentice. Krister Henriksson, Lena Endre, Lisa Boysen and Sofia Pekkari are featured.

Less deaths than usual
Tweekums27 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
After the high death toll in the previous episode this story seems very restrained. Early on an eighteen year old girl who is part of a choir goes missing during the night. There are plenty of suspects; her recently dumped boy friend, her parents and a rather creepy guy who attended the choir's latest performance. At first it is suspected that she may have run away after a falling out with the woman leading the choir, she has a history of running away. Wallander has a feeling that something isn't right however and begins an investigation. When the girl who was sharing a room with the missing girl also disappears the investigations turns up a gear. We see that the first girl has been kidnapped rather than murdered but as she tries to escape she falls in the woods and dies, although it isn't clear if her death is due to her fall or the kidnapper attacking her. A witness to the second kidnapping points Isabell in the direction of the creepy guy and when she gets to his house and finds photographs of the two girls it looks as if the case is solved... although perhaps he has a far more innocent reason to have the photograph.

Although this week's episode had more deaths than usual, and the one we get was just a kidnapping that went wrong, it was still enjoyable. There were early signs as to who the kidnapper might be although I swallowed the various red herrings hook, line and sinker without suspecting the actual kidnapper. As always for this series the acting seemed good although not speaking Swedish I have to rely on the subtitles to understand them. The only weak points to me were the fact that the police didn't thoroughly search the school the choir were staying which seems an unlikely oversight and once again one of the rookies goes off on their own to follow up on a lead.
