When the web series format burst on the scene in the early days of Youtube, it brought with it a great deal of promise for young creatives looking to break into the competitive entertainment industry. The shorter format and smaller budget requirements allowed Diy film-makers the opportunity to create, free of interference from studio gatekeepers, while the democratized distribution ensured that every series, good or bad (Oh, so many bad ones), had the ability to find an audience. Those series that did manage to cut through the clutter, gave the creative individuals involved opportunities they might not have had otherwise.
As the tenth anniversary of the web series draws near, now is the perfect time to see what impact they have had on careers. First up, Sophie Tilson.

A passionate Encore reader made this video, inspired by our Web Series article.
At Encore, we would like to clarify a few points:
1. YouTube was not the main platform for Nicholas Carlton’s Ozgirl series. The show was presented on its own website, which had most of the hits. It’s also being distributed through KoldCast TV and has been sold to an airline. It’s won a couple of international awards, so as far as we’re concerned, it is an example of a successful Australian online drama. And we certainly do not believe any of the subscriber accounts on the YouTube channel are ‘fake’ accounts!
2. The article focuses on web Drama series, so Ozgirl and The Future Machine can’t really be compared to Natalie Tran’s channel.
3. At the time Encore went to print, The Future Machine had just been released. We believe it’s unfair to...

Online is no longer a detour for television content; it is now a destination in its own right. Georgina Pearson reports.
Barely five years ago, to suggest that a series created purely for an online platform could outperform a top rating Us TV show would be almost laughable. Now, with the internet swiftly becoming a primary source of video content, video is not just being replayed online – it is being produced specifically for it. And as online audiences grow faster than anyone can keep up, a gap of opportunity has opened for the taking.
Globally, web series such lonelygirl15, The Guild and Legion of Extraordinary Dancers (Lxd) have drawn a fan-base to rival any primetime TV drama. Raking in millions of views, they have not only helped kickstart
a niche industry, but have highlighted the huge potential other such shows could possibly have. It’s such serious business that an...

One of the benefits of being out in Australia for a conference, means some face to face time with some of the best web creators down under. I caught up with OzGirl creator Nicholas Carlton who continues to make a name for himself in the Aussie creative scene. Having just graduated film school, Carlton—now all of 20 years old—has ventured into the commercial directing world. But don’t think he took the easy way. He is very much still the crafty new media creator that was able to score international press and heaps of honors for his indie drama series OzGirl. Shoot first, figure out the rest later. Instead of pitching his steamy concept for a lingerie ad to the Australian ad agencies, Carlton decided to bypass them all together and go straight to the brands. In this case it was the slew of Aussie lingerie retailers. Eventually he...

A cocktail party so crazy you have to sign a waiver just to get in? I was intrigued. Intrigued enough to hop on the freeway a few miles up to a dark corner of North Hollywood to find the undisclosed home base of the web’s latest live-streaming reality show. Walking up to the three-story loft building it became clear this wasn’t going to be my run-of-the-mill Saturday night drinks at a friend’s place. Before entering the ControlTV loft, I’m hustled into a back room filled with producers and burly Pa types ushering me through a waiver and some ground rules. “Try to keep this PG-13,” said one of the younger producers on duty that night. “Just basically don’t drop the f-bomb too much.” She mentions the 30-second delay on the live stream they’ve set up just in case we get out of hand. And...

This is the first in a new series of profiles centered on the people who make web series. The goal is to provide a bit of insight into not only the actors but also the writers, creators, and even the agents and executives working in the web TV space. Hopefully, this will be a series that readers will enjoy. First up, OzGirl star, Shanrah Wakefield. Shanrah Wakefield grew up in the small town of Moe (pronounced Mowee) in Victoria, Australia before moving to Melbourne when she was 17. After a stint at the Lee Strasburg Theater Institute in Los Angeles, she returned to Australia and graduated from Monash University in Melbourne, earning degrees in Liberal Arts and Law. In Australia, one can earn a law degree in four years rather than the debt-crushing seven needed in the Us. “I think people will be surprised to learn I’m a lawyer”, she...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

Academy voters had their hands full this year in pairing down some 2,000 web shows submitted from fans in over 100 different countries. Voters weren't shy in acknowledging the international fare with nominated series coming from Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, France, Canada and The United States. The official nominees for the 2nd Annual Streamy Awards were announced this morning in a live streamed internet broadcast led by CBSNews.com's Shira Lazar and theStream.tv's Jim Festante. Click here for the full list of Streamy Award nominees. Whole Lotta Drama While comedy series seemed to run the table last year thanks to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and The Guild, this time voters lauded a handful of dramas with multiple nominations. The Bannen Way led with seven nominations including Best Drama, Best Writing, Best Directing and Best Actor for co-creator and lead Mark Gantt. Gritty indie drama Compulsions also is in the Best Drama hunt,...

We've said it before, but this whole web series movement isn't just an American thing. Sure, it's quite the rage here in the states and especially in our own backyard of Los Angeles. But still, there are web series created daily all over the world, some of which we can't understand what's being said, and we do our best to keep you fine readers up to speed on these foreign gems. News out of Australian web series scene today is twofold—first, that indie drama OzGirl has inked a deal with Virgin's V Australia to be on the seatback screens of all its flights (and trust us, those are really long flights) starting in Novemeber for a one year run of its 23 episodes through its free on demand video service. The low-budget indie series, which was shot for a reported $7000 (Aus), is no stranger to Us web series fans however since it launched last fall,...

19 year-old Australian filmmaker Nicholas Carlton continues to make waves in Us, with his teen drama web series OzGirl being selected for the Independent Television Festival in Los Angeles. The series caught our eye last November and later signed a distribution deal with KoldCast TV before its January launch. Sophie Tilson stars as teenage country girl Sadie Brown who packs up and heads to the big city life of Melbourne, Australia where she tries her hand at photography and along the way meets a handful of new friends like Megan (Shanrah Wakefield) and potential love interest George (Richard Askin). The vlog-style show seems to have struck a chord with former lonelygirl15 fans, many of which have been actively watching on Bebo and KoldCast TV while chatting the show up on web TV community forums at Anchor Cove. The OzGirl.tv site itself is also a community hub, built around social networking platform Ning.
