Homeless in Hollywood is an interesting look at a young struggling actor
tavm7 July 2011
In looking for shorts on this site, I stumbled onto this one about an aspiring actor living in a warehouse. His name is Marcus Proctor and he really wants to make it in Hollywood. He mentions he's in two plays, one of them as an understudy, and in a couple of features and also had a web site but had to give that up. He showers in the church bathroom and goes to the library a few times. He seems to have a positive attitude about the whole thing and is glad that since his parents trust him, they're not so worried about him. It's not until after the film ends that we find out that three days later, the manager of the warehouse threw him out and is now sleeping in acquaintances' couches. Considering all the subsequent titles I found of his on this site, I hope he saved enough money to at least stay in an apartment. In summary, Homeless in Hollywood is a fascinating look at one struggling actor's life early in his career.

Nice little documentary short

Warning: Spoilers
The Australia-born Marcus Proctor goes to Hollywood, California to pursue his dream of becoming a successful actor (so far he's only managed to snag an acting gig in one play and work as an understudy in another play, plus has acted in a few movies). While struggling to achieve this particular goal Proctor crashes at a warehouse and cleans himself in a church bathroom. Moreover, Proctor maintains his cheerful and optimistic disposition regardless of how hard things become during his journey. Director Hollis McLachlan wisely just observes the hearty and likable Proctor and never says anything good or bad about him. Proctor's boundless energy and infectiously sunny upbeat attitude make him an engaging enough protagonist; one can't help but admire this guy's sheer determination and resourcefulness as he avidly goes after his dream. Although Proctor gets kicked out of the warehouse and winds up sleeping on friends' coaches at the very end, one gets the lasting impression that he's not going to quit until he has what he wants. It's this keep your chin up kind of fighting spirit which in turn makes Proctor and this short such an uplifting joy to watch. A lovely short.
