Done with real respect and winningly wholehearted affection for all those classic Universal Studios monsters of the 30's, 40's, and 50's, this sweet little cartoon short shows such classic creatures as Count Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the Gillman, and the Wolfman as little children who to varying degrees show hints of the more fearsome adult beasts they would grow up to become. The most charming story centers on lovestruck lunk Frankenstein's monster and his clumsy efforts to win over the heart of the Bride. Frank gets romantic advice from the haughty and deceitful Count Dracula, who's actually using the poor clueless lummox in order to have the Bride for himself. Nerdy intellectual the Invisible Kid provides the biggest laughs as he relentlessly (over)scrutinizes the logic of everything. Moreover, it's a hoot to see tyke versions of the Wolfman and the Gillman playfully wrestle with each other while Hyde Jr. comes across as a mean two-faced jerk. Director Scott Essman keeps everything suitably pleasant and lightweight throughout. The animation is both colorful and effective. Kudos are also in order for Tom Bimmerman's classy piano-driven score. An enjoyable diversion.
