FremantleMedia has picked up a 75% stake in Thom Beers' Original Prods., producers of Ice Road Truckers, America's Toughest Jobs, Deadliest Catch and a host of other reality based television series. The stake will cost FremantleMedia an estimated $50 million. Beers retains the remaining 25% and will continue as CEO; Philip Segal as President.

FremantleMedia North America is in talks to acquire Thom Beers' Original Prods.
Beers, who founded Original in 1999, has created a distinct "blue collar hero" unscripted programming brand with such shows as "Deadliest Catch," "Ice Road Truckers" and "Axeman." With a dozen series on television, mostly on cable, he's one of the most prolific reality producers.
A deal would expand Beers' existing business relationship with Fremantle. In August, Fremantle picked up international distribution rights to several Original series: "Verminators," "America's Port, L.A.," "Hard Hats," "1,000 Ways to Die" and "Black Gold."
It's been an active year for acquisitions in the reality field, led by Shine Group's buy of Reveille and Endemol USA's purchase of a controlling stake in Cris Abrego and Mark Cronin's 51 Minds. Both deals could reach $200 million if financial targets are met.
Financial terms for a potential Fremantle/Original deal are unclear, but observers value it at less than $100 million.

A&E is getting back into business with writer-producer Charles Murray after their recent collaboration on the drama pilot "Under," developing a new project centering on a city commissioner.
"The Lost Son" is part of a two-script deal that Murray has inked with ABC Studios. The other script is a blind commitment.
"Son," from ABC Studios and Thom Beers' Original Prods., is an "Upstairs/Downstairs" look at the inner workings of a city commissioner's office and how his actions directly affect street crime in each police precinct. The project centers on a cop who suddenly jumps 15 levels to become the new commissioner of a large city but continues doing police work at night. He also continues to investigate his mother's murder.
Murray is writing and executive producing; Beer and Original's Philip Segal are nonwriting exec producers.
"Under" is not going forward at A&E, but the network was impressed with Murray,...

Looks like NBC programmers still have one of America's toughest jobs.
The network's first new series to premiere since the conclusion of the Beijing Olympics opened on par compared with other summer reality fare Monday, suggesting that the Peacock's freshman entertainment programming might not enjoy a ratings bump despite weeks of heavy on-air promotion during the most-watched event in TV history.
Thom Beers' reality competition series "America's Toughest Jobs" (7.3 million, 2.7 rating/7 share in adults 18-49) narrowly won the 9 p.m. hour against CBS repeats and nearly matched the season average for the network's recently concluded "The Baby Borrowers."
"Jobs," whose episodes will air between summer and fall, dropped slightly from its lead-in, the season premiere of "Deal or No Deal" (11 million, 2.8/9), the most-viewed and highest-rated show of the night.
"Deal" posted NBC's best performance in the time period since February and was up 12% from its September premiere last year.

“This is not a game show. This is life or death.” –Eric Waterhouse. Actually dude, if you were on one of producer Thom Beers’ other shows, like Ice Road Truckers or Deadliest Catch or Ax Men, then yeah, you’d be talking life or death. The appeal of Beers’ formidable slate of reality series—littered across basic cable as wantonly as Scrubs re-runs—is that they show actual, non-tv-ready people displaying expertise at arcane occupations. Beers' best work is visually dynamic, and cut with a healthy streak of “Those guys must be nuts!” But Eric? You’re a sculptor from Long Beach. You can’t tell me that you really want to be out on a crab boat in the Bering Sea, trying to haul up traps faster than a secretary from New Jersey. You got a call back from the casting agency because you fit a type:...

NBC has tweaked its Thursday lineup, adding the new Kath & Kim to its comedy block.
The network also has opted to stick to a traditional rollout, launching the bulk of its fall lineup during premiere week, and to put on the new reality competition series America's Toughest Jobs earlier than planned.
There has been speculation that NBC might use its Aug. 8-24 Summer Olympics coverage as a springboard for an early fall rollout. Instead, the network will hold off, saving originals for the regular season and avoiding going head-to-head with Fox, which already has slotted several high-profile season premieres for the week of Aug. 25.
NBC will kick off premiere week Monday, Sept. 22, with a full night of Heroes, a clips show leading to a two-hour season premiere.
Also slated to launch during premiere week are Law & Order: SVU on Sept. 23, new drama Knight Rider and Lipstick Jungle on Sept. 24 and comedies My Name Is Earl and The Office -- which will return with one-hour premieres -- as well as ER on Sept.
