Prospective dog owners are sometimes warned that having a puppy is like having a new baby — sleepless, grueling and thankless. Often, new pet parents realize the hard way that their puppy is absolutely nothing like a tiny infant: in fact, it’s worse. Babies, generally, don’t draw blood.
During the pandemic, when pup parents were stranded at home with furry land sharks, in the absence of group classes or in-person behaviorist sessions, one source of accessible guidance came in the form of dog training TV shows. In the U.K., where Kennel Club data indicates that 25% of new dog owners bought a puppy during the pandemic without doing their research, these shows became a lifeline.
“They are tuning in because you want to know that other people are in the same situation,” says London-based dog behaviorist and trainer Louise Glazebrook, who stars in the BBC’s “12 Puppies and Us.

There were six season finales in primetime Tuesday — Fox’s “The Resident” and “Prodigal Son,” and ABC’s “Pooch Perfect,” “Black-ish,” “Mixed-ish” and “Big Sky” — and none of them were a contender. As a matter of fact, ABC settled for fifth place in TV ratings despite airing nothing but finales. CBS and NBC tied for first in ratings, both with a 0.6 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. CBS was first in total viewers with an average of 7 million, according to preliminary numbers. NBC was second in total viewers with 4.4 million total viewers. As many ABC scripted series remain in limbo, the network has confirmed some of the unscripted offerings coming back.
The network has ordered American Idol Season 5, Shark Tank Season 13, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune Season 2, America's Funniest Home Videos Season 32, and Supermarket Sweep Season 2.
None of the renewals are surprising.
All five shows have performed well for ABC this season, so it was only a matter of time before a formal pickup was announced.
ABC has been bulking up its unscripted slate over the last year, and it has helped keep the lights on when there has been a lack of scripted offerings.
The network has yet to make decisions on The Bachelor, Who Wanta to Be a Millionaire, Match Game, and Pooch Perfect.
The Bachelor is a lock for renewal, but there's still plenty of time for it to be picked up because the series typically airs in January.

ABC on Thursday announced a slew of unscripted renewals for the 2021-22 season ahead of the network’s May 18 upfront presentation. The renewals included a mix of reality veterans in Shark Tank (Season 13), America’s Funniest Home Videos (Season 32) and American Idol (Season 5), and newcomers Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (Season 2) following a highly rated winter run and Supermarket Sweep (Season 2).
Missing from the list of renewals are The Bachelor, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Match Game and freshman Pooch Perfect.
According to sources, ABC is prioritizing pickups for series that will air this summer and fall, and all of the four shows above are for midseason 2022 consideration.

NBC and CBS tie atop Tuesday, when ABC’s “Pooch Perfect” put its tail between its legs “The Voice” was a welcome addition to NBC’s Tuesday lineup, but the singing competition did not do enough to shake off CBS. ABC tied with Telemundo again, and Fox matched up with Univision — airing “Prodigal Son” one day after announcing its cancellation didn’t work out. Fox’s “The Resident” at 8 p.m. fared a bit better, posting a 0.5 rating/3 share in the advertiser-sought adults 18-49 demographic. The medical drama drew 2.9 million total viewers. At 9, “Prodigal Son” got a 0.4/2 and 1.9 million total viewers. CBS finished No. 1 in total viewers last night. CBS and NBC tied for first in ratings, both with a 0.6/4. Now that Fox has canceled Prodigal Son, all eyes are on fellow Tuesday drama The Resident.
The latest episode of which slipped to its lowest total viewer tally to date.
2.9 million viewers marks a decline of around 500,000 viewers week-to-week.
The series was steady in the demo, and a renewal decision should come in the days ahead.
As a whole, the series is still a decent performer, but with Fox having many new shows on deck for next season, it could potentially cut The Resident to make way for another new drama.
Afterward, the penultimate episode of Prodigal Son was steady at 1.9 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.
Over on CBS, NCIS (8.6 million/0.6 rating) and FBI (7.4 million/0.6 rating) dropped hard vs. last week, while FBI: Most Wanted (5.7 million/0.4 rating) was steady.
All three shows are renewed for next season and CBS is expanding both franchises with new series.

ABC’s Rebel Wilson-hosted dog-grooming competition “Pooch Perfect” grew from last week in both its rating and overall audience size. While the two shows might not have a Ton of natural crossover, it certainly didn’t hurt that CBS’ “NCIS” was in reruns. A little growth doesn’t mean ABC topped primetime ratings though — that distinction went to NBC. However, even with its whole run of repeats — and a new “This Is Us” on NBC — CBS drew the most total viewers on Tuesday. CBS, ABC, Fox and Univision all tied for second place in the key demo’s (adults 18-49) Nielsen ratings. Also Read: Ratings: Fox's 'America's Most Wanted' Finale Gets Buried Under Singing Competitions NBC was first in ratings with a 0.5 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 3.4 million, according to preliminary numbers. “Young Rock” at 8 p.m.

Big Sky may not be the hit ABC was hoping for.
The series returned on Tuesday after a lengthy hiatus, and the numbers were down considerably.
Big Sky Season 1 Episode 10 had 3.5 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in the demo, while Big Sky Season 1 Episode 11 followed with 3.2 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.
The winter finale earlier this year was considerably stronger at 4.1 million viewers and a 0.7 rating.
The series has proven to be a big hit with delayed viewing factored in, but with the first mystery essentially wrapped up, it looks like viewers are not impressed with the Yellowstone-like approach to the second.
The show didn't exactly get a strong lead-in, either. Pooch Perfect drew 2.4 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.
Over on Fox, The Resident (3.4 million/0.5 rating) tied series lows in its midseason premiere.

Spring has sprung, and so has spring TV. With five new series premieres on broadcast under our belt thus far this spring, TheWrap has ranked the bunch by total viewers.
The leader in the clubhouse is NBC’s “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” with nearly 7.6 million total viewers, according to Nielsen’s Live + Same Day measurement. A distant No. 2 is CBS’ “United States of Al,” which hails from Chuck Lorre.
“Al” did fine, but it was no “Big Bang Theory.”
See what we’ve got thus far below.
Rank: 5 • Show: “Home Economics” • Net: ABC • Total Viewers: 2.968 million • Topher Grace family comedy whipped up a decent debut, but it doesn’t rank strongly here.
Rank: 4 • Show: “Rebel” • Net: ABC • Total Viewers: 3.557 million • A decent start for 10 p.m., but good luck against “Law & Order: Organized Crime.”
Rank: 3 • Show: “Pooch Perfect” • Net: ABC • Total Viewers: 3.896 million • Not perfect, but not bad.

Spring has finally arrived. But because it probably won’t be safe enough to fully enjoy the change in weather until the majority of the population has been vaccinated against Covid-19, it’s a good thing broadcast networks have lined up new programming to keep us busy indoors a while longer.
ABC, Fox, CBS, NBC and The CW have set several spring premiere dates for their respective series, and TheWrap has rounded up all the debuts thus far for fresh and continuing shows, which you can find below.

The sporadic scheduling is having a big impact on the ratings for This Is Us.
The NBC drama, which returned Tuesday from another week off, mustered 4.4 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo.
These figures mark new series lows in both measures.
This Is Us is already renewed for Season 6, which is very likely to be the end of the line for the Pearson family.
Elsewhere on the night for NBC, Young Rock (2.6 million/0.5 rating), Kenan (1.9 million/0.4 rating), and New Amsterdam (3.5 million/0.4 rating) were all steady.
Out of those shows, New Amsterdam is already locked in for next season.
Over on CBS, the arrival of Mark Harmon's real-life wife kept NCIS (9.9 million/0.9 rating) on top.
FBI (7.9 million/0.7 rating) took a dip, but FBI: Most Wanted (6.4 million/0.6 rating) had its highest audience of the season.
ABC's Pooch Perfect (2.5 million/0.4 rating) slipped considerably in Week 2, while black-ish (1.6 million/0.3 rating...
