After researching and teaching web television for over three years, I was ironically accepted as a faculty fellow of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences a few weeks ago. The fellowship was an exploration of traditional television and how it is adapting to the changing landscape of television production. About twenty television professors were accepted in all and all of us were shocked to find that television professionals we met were excited by the changes in the entertainment industry, especially the move to online distribution. The reason: television transcends. Television evolved simultaneously to the technology that displayed it: the Crt. Yet, unlike other mass media, the technology is currently disappearing and television, the form, is remaining. Television is now an application on a screen. While television professionals, whether from old media or new media, are excited by the limitless prospects of television creation, television academics are just starting to understand the value.

Darth Vader is one of the great movie villains, but something about the character just seems built for parody. Maybe it’s because — with his jet-black evil-samurai-robot suit and his stentorian speech patterns — he’s the definition of evil incarnate. Or maybe it’s because he’s wearing a mask, so it’s easy to dub in hilarious new dialogue. There’s a whole parade of great Vader spoof videos: “Vader Sessions,” which brilliantly mixed in dialogue from other James Earl Jones movies; the beloved “Chad Vader” series; “Darth Vader Being a Smartass,” possibly the best use of Final Cut...

To celebrate the release of Robot Chicken Star Wars Episode 3 on July 4th, we have pulled together the top 9 (why is it always top 10?) Star Wars parodies on the web. From Eddie Izzards infamous Death Star canteen scene to Darth, I mean Chad’s foray into Supermarket management, Star Wars always seems ripe for spoofing.
Chad Vader – Day Shift Manager
Darth Vader’s brother Chad Vader rules his empire, the local grocery store, with an iron fist.
Empire State of Mind
Darth Vader has the Empire on his mind. And he is going to sing about it.
Eddie Izzard – Death Star Canteen
There must have been a canteen on the death star. With lego people no?
Trooper Coffee Run
3 day journey across the death star…for coffee.
Darth Vader Rap
Vader lets everyone in the galaxy know what’s up.
Thumb Wars – The Phantom Cuticle
Injured Stormtrooper
The troops become...

I lost track of all the things that got mashed into this one, from Thor, Captain America, and Superman to Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Doctor Who, The Big Bang Theory, and Leia’s slave girl outfit, all to an Enrique Iglesias tune.

Fantasy has a funny way of capturing the imagination of the geek demographic. While readers of Harlequin romances, fans of John Ford westerns, or lovers of historical epics may daydream about their particular field of interest and imagine themselves as heroes or lovers in their genre of choice, 'hardcore' fantasy adherents simply aren't content with wondering "what if?". A true geek's love for his beloved material invariably translates to a real-life imitative lifestyle. A lover of all things medieval visits ye olde Renaissance Faires, complete with broadsword and chain mail. A Trekker wouldn't dream of attending the latest Star Trek convention without his Starfleet uniform, replica tricorder and phaser, and a practiced Vulcan salute. A Dr. Who fanatic has his Sonic Screwdriver and 1/6th scale Tardis. And a huge Star Wars nerd has...well...a seriously-distressing compulsion, to the average layperson.
Such is one of many issues touched upon, but never mocked,...

In this guest post, Dylan Watson, co-producer of Movie Extra Webfest finalist project True Brains, talks about his experience working on a web series.
Movie Extra Webfest is the first competition of its kind in Australia. With the webseries being a fairly new format, we weren’t sure what to expect when we entered with our trailer True Brains. Now we’re in the final 15 out of around 100 original entries. Beyond that, we’re part of a competition urging Australians to put quality content online and see what happens. We’ve seen short films, trailers and teasers launch international careers thanks to viral media, YouTube links and Facebook. Any one of us could be the next big thing and all we need to do is indulge our little filmmaking fantasies (not just the clean ones) and hit “upload”.
True Brains began as a spoof of a particularly successful television show called Glee.

The concluding part of our journey into the home of Star Wars...
When we spoke to Force Unleashed II art director Matt Omernick, he told us about the sense of seamless transition between the movies and games, between the original Star Wars trilogy and its high-tech modern successors. We soon discovered that this idea of cross-platform continuity is carried through to the audio effects.
Despite being surrounded by digital technology, the Star Wars sound engineers – like the Force Unleashed art team – are forever returning to the series' improvisational foundations. While Omernick, talks about researching old movie props and poring over Ralph McQuarrie's concept sketches, everyone in the audio dept idolises Ben Burtt, the sound designer who created just about every iconic Star Wars noise, from the swishing fizz of the lightsabers to R2D2's bleeps and Darth Vader's bronchial respiratory wheeze. "His concept is that you should take...

Way back in 2006, Wisconsin filmmakers Aaron Yoda and Matt Sloan envisioned what it would be like if one of popular culture's most famous archetypes of evil worked the day shift at your local supermarket. A few days of shooting in a neighborhood grocery co-op and one $600 Darth Vader suit later, Yoda and Sloan released what would become one of the first, big online video hits to draw attention from both mainstream media and the early YouTube crowd. Under the banner of Blame Society Productions, Yoda and Sloan went on to produce 20+ episodes of Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager, spanning across three seasons, and garnering tens of millions of views, all with the same premise: "Life is hard when you're Darth Vader's less-talented, less-charismatic younger brother and you manage a grocery store." The happenings of a hapless dark lord with lady troubles and a blue collar job still remain relatively popular,...

Stupid For Movies is a weekly live streamed web show airing on Ustream every Thursday at 8 Pm Pdt. Created by Mike Rotman (Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show, Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher), the show is hosted by La Film critics Mark Keizer and Wade Major (IGN's The Digigods). Each week Keizer and Major discuss the best and worst in movies, including reviewing the latest movies to hit the theater, recommending DVDs to “Buy, Rent or Burn”, and talk news with special anchor Chad Vader. Rotman was kind enough to invite myself and my photographer (Aka: boyfriend), Stuart, down to the Streamin’ Garage studio, named for the fact that it literally is a converted garage, to view an episode taping. Though the show does run live, episodes of the show are then converted and uploaded to blip.tv (a job Rotman does himself, a bit of which we witnessed as we...
