Still looked like a standard plot, then I was really and truly subverted

We start with our anti-hero Hei saving Chiaki, who finally seems to trust Hei. Is this an error, in a standard plot line I would expect this to be the case, but who knows here. The bulk of this episode covers the developing relationship between Hei and Chiaki. We know the Chiaki is serious, but we never know what's in the heart of Hei. By now you should have worked out that the dorky student and our ruthless anti-hero, the reaper, are the same person. Then we have our final climatic scene and once again we are unsure if Hei is protecting Chiaki or is using her like a pawn. When Hei meets up with the team after Chiaki we get the big reveal and it's a massive subversion of the plot line. I expected two possible outcomes, but what was presented was totally a surprise. The actual fight sense includes a number of twists and the final twist with Chiaki and Hei is another bombshell. This is a great episode, by the end you are totally invested in the relationship between Hei and Chiaki, so when the double whammy reveals hits you, it really hits you. I cannot praise this episode enough, its great. The plot hole I mentioned earlier becomes obvious after you think about it for a bit. When did the cause of the plot twist occur, there is only one gap where it could have occurred and what Chiaki says does not seem to match what should have occurred at the time. As I indicated earlier some plot twisting has occurred to provide us with the awesome ending, I can forgive the writers for this because it was not caused by poor quality writing getting the story teller into a plot-trap, it was designed to give a high impact ending.
