Masterpiece episode.

Warning: Spoilers
I've just started rewatching this series again. And upon rewatching this episode it struck me as such a masterpiece.

First of all, L is introduced as a new character. And Ryuk comes face-to-face with Light. Both are confrontations but of different types.

At first, Ryuk scared Light. But then we find out that Light was expecting him. Light's intelligence and logic about what is going on are amazing. Ryuk loves apples and he's really funny as he is intrigued by Light and delights in all that is happening which is curing his boredom.

What I found thought-provoking was Light's psychological analysis of humans. About what people would say about killing criminals and about what they really think. And how you can be anonymous on the internet and say what you really think. I can't help but be reminded of a certain person who was a president and developed a cult following based on this same premise. The same thing will happen to Light as Kira. But is this really true? I would say some of what he said rings true. It's an appeal to baser instincts, revenge. But I think what Light lacks is compassion and empathy and he himself is delighting in his killings. Some people in prison are actually innocent. And delighting in the murder of criminals is the dark side of humanity, a moral decline.

I love how Light meticulously hid the death note. That scene was cool as he explained what he did to Ryuk.

Another great part of this episode was when L confronted Light and outsmarted him. He was meticulous too as he explained how he figured out Kira was in Japan, and who the first victim was. This scene illustrates the contrast between Light's more self-righteous and ego-driven sense of justice, as Kira, and L's more methodical and impartial pursuit of truth.

Anyway, this episode struck me as one of the best in the series - thought-provoking, meticulous characters, intriguing L, and funny Ryuk. 10/10.

I feel like the Shinigami right now

Because he was just commenting on how L is smart and how Light and L make an interesting and exciting rivalry. If any of you have watched The Prestige (the majority of you probably haven't) then you know when I say that the two magicians in The Prestige give me the same thrilling feeling as Light and L. This episode is amazing and makes me feel like the creators of this show are big-brain.

Light Meets His Match...
Kilmern-933193 March 2023
Who would have thought that the second episode of a series would be my favorite one? Confrontation is a phenomenal episode and provides a introduction to one of the best detectives in television history, L.

This episode is suspenseful, intriguing, and has many pivotal moments of the show. It's interesting to see Light, cunning as ever, delve more into madness with his idea of justice.

The first confrontation between L and Light is a masterpiece and sets the stage for the mental chess game that would take place in the later episodes. In just over 20 minutes, it accomplishes more than what most shows do in triple the time. Light Yagami has finally met his match.

10/10.

THE WAR BEGINS
RetroSprites24 February 2021
This is where the rivalry of Light (Kira) and L is marked and the ideal of Light is shown more thoroughly, showing that whoever is not on his side and wants to harm him will be annihilated, good OST too (especially L's) and (as in most of the series) very good shots. 9.2 / 10 very good episode.

Genial

Warning: Spoilers
In this episode, the anime already covers the core of the police and in particular the mysterious L. The police already notice a modus operantis of unexpected deaths happening but have no idea who or how they are doing it. We also see that even at Interpol there is disagreement as to whether what Light is doing is good or bad because criminals are being killed. At that time, when the internet was in its infancy, it was already noticed that human beings act differently in person and virtually, due to the anonymity that the internet provides. And with that, those who are in Light's favor decide to name him Kira, which fuels the protagonist's ego more and makes him think he is doing the right thing. Here we see that Light/Kira goes to great lengths to prove that he is right, even if he kills a detective because he is an obstacle on his journey to become the god of his little world. And here begins the most brilliant confrontation of all anime that has ever existed, even without needing a shock of thunder, kamehameha, dragon's wrath, nine-tailed fox. Their only super powers are their super genius and Light still has the triumph that is the Death Note. This confrontation deserved an infinitely better live-action than Netflix provided. Episode two watched on March 5, 2024.
