The other day I was talking with editor Mike Gold about the political state of our country – Mike and I have marathon conversations about politics – and I asked him if he had seen and/or heard the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland of the D.C. Circuit Court by President Obama for a seat on the Supreme Court. “He’s into comics,” I said. Or was.
So how do I know about the comics connection? Just in case you missed the nomination or haven’t read it somewhere, here is the relevant part – at least for readers of comics and ComicMix – of the transcript of President Obama’s introduction of Judge Garland to us, the general public:
“He was born and raised in the Land of Lincoln, in my home town of Chicago, my home state of Illinois. His other volunteered in the community. His father ran a small business out of their home.

[As you probably already know, starting on Thursday, August 21, Fxx is running the Every Simpsons Ever Marathon, running through all 552 episodes of "The Simpsons," plus "The Simpsons Movie." To aid in your viewing process, Team HitFix is selecting our favorite episodes from each day, plus an episode or two that you can skip and use as a bathroom or nap break.] Somehow, despite including two different clip shows, Day 3 of Fxx's Every Simpsons Ever Marathon leads us deep into the show's Golden Years, as we finish Season 4, go through Season 5 and most of Season 6, spanning from "So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show" through "The PTA Disbands." For the second straight day, we had no trouble picking two favorites apiece and we left out a slew of great episodes including Krusty's Kancellation, Bart's rise to "I Didn't Do It!" fame, James Woods' stint at the Kwik-e-Mart, Homer's trip into space and Lisa's attempts to design a new Malibu Stacy. [The image accompanying this story is from "Marge in Chains" which, if I'm being honest, didn't come close to making our list, but it's the only official image Fxx was able to provide for the episodes airing on Saturday.] My own greatest regret is that I couldn't pick "Treehouse of Horror V," which features "The Shinning" and "Time and Punishment," which are two of my five "Treehouse" segments. However, I stand by the two episodes I chose. And guess what? Day 4 was even Harder, choosing-wise. But that's tomorrow.

It takes a lot to anger agreeable Canadians — but when Ben Affleck’s Argo premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last month, the movie managed to do just that.
Argo tells the true story of how six American citizens were successfully rescued from Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis. Canucks were mildly upset to find that the film paints the CIA as heroes while downplaying the role of Canadians stationed at their Iranian embassy, which sheltered the Americans for months. Director Affleck took their criticism to heart, adding a new postscript to the film that specifies that the CIA’s involvement...

Wedding bells are not on the horizon for Angelina Jolie. The Oscar-winner recently spoke to Vanity Fair about her upcoming directorial debut, but took the time to dispel any rumors that she is tying the knot with longtime partner Brad Pitt. “There’s no secret wedding,” she bluntly told Vf contributing editor Rich Cohen, “I’m not pregnant, I’m not adopting at the moment.” Once she got that out of the way, Angie hunkered down to discuss work on her passion project, Land of Blood and Honey, for which she’s not only behind the camera but also behind the pen. “I had the flu,” she said about how she came to write the screenplay. “I had to be quarantined from the children for two days. I was in the attic of a house in France…So I started writing.” She then sent a copy of the script to Brad for a second opinion.
